Gospel World Mourns: Kenya's Betty Bayo Dies After Battle with Leukaemia
Celebrated Kenyan gospel artist Betty Bayo, widely known for her soulful hit song "11th Hour" (also referred to as "Eleventh Hour"), has passed away. She breathed her last on Monday afternoon, at approximately 1 pm, while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by a family representative, accompanied by her relatives and partner, and also by her ex-partner, Pastor Victor Kanyari.
Betty Bayo had been battling leukaemia, a short but intense struggle that ultimately led to her demise. According to family sources, she was suffering from excessive bleeding and had been admitted to KNH on Friday, having been transferred from AAR Hospital along Kiambu Road. "She was suffering from excessive bleeding. The doctors did their best, but the will of God has prevailed," a family spokesperson stated, highlighting the efforts made to save her life. Pastor Kanyari described her as "a woman of strength and faith."
Bayo rose to prominence through her powerful gospel anthem, "11th Hour," a song that became a beacon of hope for countless individuals. Its message of divine intervention and triumph against overwhelming odds resonated deeply with audiences, quickly making it a church favorite and an anthem across gospel platforms nationwide. The track solidified her position as one of Kenya's most influential gospel voices.
Beyond her profound impact on the music scene, Betty Bayo was admired for her versatility and creativity. She made an indelible mark as a content creator, a fashion influencer, and a dedicated faith-based advocate. Her resilience, authenticity, and unwavering devotion to her ministry inspired many, showcasing her diverse talents and commitment to uplifting others.
Her personal life saw her previously married to Pastor Victor Kanyari. Although the two later went their separate ways, they maintained a cordial relationship and successfully co-parented their children, a testament to their mutual respect.
Following her passing, Betty Bayo's body has been moved to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital Mortuary as funeral arrangements commence. Tributes have been pouring in from fellow artists, fans, and industry leaders, all praising her humility, creativity, and steadfast devotion to her ministry. She leaves behind a strong legacy of spiritual encouragement and an exceptional contribution to the gospel music industry, remembered as a woman of faith whose music and life testified to perseverance, hope, and divine grace.
