Google Rocks Nigeria: All the Buzz from the #GoogleForNigeria Event!

The second edition of the Google for Nigeria event, held at the Landmark event centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, brought together a diverse group of creators, innovators, business owners, and digital enthusiasts. The event aimed to showcase Google's newest improvements designed to enhance user experience in Nigeria, fostering an environment where Google platform users, partners, and stakeholders could engage in insightful sessions.
A significant announcement at the event was the launch of Google Station, an initiative providing free Wi-Fi hotspots across Nigeria. Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, Google’s Country Manager, revealed that five free Wi-Fi stations had been activated in public locations across Lagos, including Unilag Campus, Computer Village Ikeja, Muritala Mohammed Airport Wing 2, Ikeja City Mall, and The Palms Lekki, as well as the Landmark Center. This project, rolled out in partnership with Internet Service Provider 21st Century Limited, aims to alleviate the burden of data affordability and accessibility, thereby contributing to Nigeria's broadband penetration goals. Google expressed openness to further partnerships with other ISPs and telcos. The ambitious plan is to deploy 200 Google Stations across five Nigerian cities—Lagos, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, and Abuja—by 2019, with the goal of serving over 10 million Nigerians. These stations will be strategically located in markets, transport hubs, shopping malls, and universities. Nigeria marks the fifth country to benefit from the Google Station initiative, following India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Mexico, highlighting Africa's evolving digital landscape given that only 35 percent of Africans currently have web access.
