Godzilla's Ultimate Foe: Kurt Russell Teases Monsterverse's Next Big Threat

Collider's Steve Weintraub recently conducted an interview with Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, the stars of Apple TV+'s monumental sci-fi series, "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters." The conversation delved into expectations for the show's second season, Wyatt Russell's highly anticipated spinoff series, and even a humorous anecdote about a Super Bowl commercial featuring Kurt Russell and Wyatt's Marvel co-star, Lewis Pullman.
Both Kurt and Wyatt Russell portray the character of Army officer Lee Shaw across different timelines in "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters." When discussing how Season 2 compares to its predecessor, Wyatt described it as "more like a moving train" – a more linear and non-stop experience where viewers are already familiar with the characters and their dynamics, allowing those relationships to blossom. He noted that Season 1 involved finding one's footing and getting to know the characters, whereas Season 2 feels "easier" in its flow.
Kurt Russell elaborated, stating that Season 2 begins to answer many of the questions presented in the first season. He characterized Season 1 as "Alice goes down the rabbit hole," implying an initial exploration into the unknown. Season 2, he suggested, is when "Grandma comes out, and what she found down the rabbit hole comes out," meaning the consequences and further revelations from that initial discovery will be confronted. The overarching plot of Season 2 sees the fate of the organization Monarch and the world itself hanging in the balance, with heroes and foes reuniting on Kong's Skull Island. There, long-buried secrets, a mysterious new village, and another mythical Titan emerging from the sea will confuse the lines between friends, family, and enemies as humans face off against a formidable new threat.
The conversation also heavily focused on Wyatt Russell's upcoming "Monarch" spinoff series. Wyatt teased that viewers will have "absolutely no fucking clue what to expect," promising a surprising departure from what audiences might anticipate. The spinoff will delve deeper into Lee Shaw's experiences after he was "put on ice" in 1982, exploring the reasons for his continued relevance and the mission he embarks on. Wyatt expressed immense excitement for the project, praising the writing of the first episode by showrunner Joby Harold. He explained that the spinoff aims to fuse "Titan thing" elements with "Cold War kind of stuff" into a "very, very, very human story, a la Monarch." It will be "a little bit simpler because it's less people," focusing more on a present experience, mission, and goal rather than a sprawling past narrative. Kurt Russell added that the first two seasons of "Monarch" have already strategically dropped clues that will inform the spinoff's storyline.
On a lighter note, the Russells joked about Kurt's Super Bowl commercial featuring Lewis Pullman, who is Wyatt's co-star in the upcoming Marvel film "Thunderbolts*." Wyatt playfully feigned being "upset" that Lewis was training with his dad, but quickly clarified his genuine excitement for their collaboration. He then proposed a humorous hypothetical commercial scenario where he and Bill Pullman (Lewis's father) hawk sleeping pills, setting up an "all-star" commercial battle between the Russell and Pullman families, much to Kurt's amusement.
"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" Season 2 is currently available to stream on Apple TV+, with a spoiler-filled segment of the interview expected to be released later in the season.
