GM Ditches Apple CarPlay and Google's Android Auto For Good: Major Tech Shift!

General Motors (GM) has announced a significant shift in its in-vehicle technology strategy, revealing that future models, encompassing both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs), will no longer support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This move, initially reported by The Verge following an interview with GM CEO Mary Barra and Chief Product Officer Sterling Anderson, marks a decisive departure from integrating popular smartphone projection systems.
The transition is expected to commence with the 2028 model year vehicles, aligning with the rollout of GM's new centralized computing architecture. This advanced architecture is slated to debut in the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ. This technological overhaul promises substantial processing power, crucial for the next generation of GM's "hands off, eyes off" Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, alongside providing headroom for future features and universal compatibility across all GM powertrains.
While this decision may prove frustrating for many consumers who rely on smartphone integration for music, mapping, and messaging applications, it is consistent with GM's earlier actions. In 2023, the company had already announced the discontinuation of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from its electric vehicles, opting instead for its native infotainment system powered by Google Built-in, also known as Android Automotive OS.
This initial decision drew considerable criticism from both industry analysts and consumers, particularly ardent CarPlay users. A report from McKinsey Consulting underscored this sentiment, indicating that nearly half of automotive shoppers would reconsider purchasing a vehicle if it lacked CarPlay connectivity. Despite this, GM is doubling down on its proprietary infotainment ecosystem, which is set to incorporate a more conversational version of Google Gemini AI starting in 2026, eventually leading to GM's own proprietary AI assistant.
For Apple, GM's announcement comes at a pivotal moment, as the rollout of its next-generation CarPlay Ultra has been notably slow. Despite the widespread popularity of the basic CarPlay version, only Aston Martin currently offers CarPlay Ultra, and several other automakers have publicly stated their reluctance or slow adoption of the advanced system. For consumers, the implication is clear: those who prioritize CarPlay or Android Auto integration in their vehicles may need to consider purchasing an internal combustion vehicle from Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, or GMC within the next couple of years, as subsequent models will exclusively feature GM + Google onboard systems.
