Intense diplomatic efforts are underway to extend a fragile two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, which is set to expire on April 22. Indirect talks between the two nations continue, with Pakistan emerging as a key mediator in these high-stakes negotiations. While the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, denied formally requesting an extension, she confirmed Washington's deep engagement in the discussions, indicating that a second round of talks is highly probable in Islamabad. Despite a recent failure to reach a peace agreement, the White House expressed optimism about the prospects of a new deal.

Pakistan has launched a robust shuttle diplomacy campaign to de-escalate the conflict. Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief, led a high-powered delegation to Tehran, conveying messages from Washington and working to facilitate further US-Iranian ceasefire negotiations. Concurrently, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif embarked on a four-day tour to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, aiming to garner regional support and bolster peace initiatives. Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, confirmed the ongoing exchange of messages between Washington and Tehran, even after earlier ceasefire talks in Islamabad concluded without a resolution.

A significant hurdle in the negotiations is Iran's demand for an end to Israeli attacks on Lebanon as a precondition for another round of talks with the US. This stance directly clashes with Israel's actions and stated objectives. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly indicated he had not committed to a ceasefire, stating that the IDF was continuing to "strike Hezbollah" in its stronghold of Bint Jbeil in Lebanon. Netanyahu also confirmed instructions to broaden a "security zone" through ongoing operations in Lebanon. Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, the Israeli army chief of staff, visited troops and vowed to eradicate Hezbollah’s presence south of the Litani River, approximately 30 kilometers from the Israeli border, declaring the area a "Hezbollah terrorist kill zone." Despite these aggressive postures, two Lebanese officials have suggested a ceasefire with Israel could be announced "soon," though details remain scarce.

Economic and military pressures are also escalating in the region. The US military has implemented a naval blockade of Iranian ports following the conclusion of the Islamabad talks, with US warships reportedly turning back nine vessels, including the Chinese-owned tanker Rich Starry, which attempted to cross the Strait of Hormuz. The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, warned of an escalation in financial pressure on Iran, preparing for the "financial equivalent" of a bombing campaign through secondary sanctions on countries and companies buying Iranian oil or holding Iranian funds. In response, Maj Gen Ali Abdollahi, leader of Iran’s joint military command, threatened that Iran would halt all trade in the Gulf region if the US blockade persisted, extending to the Gulf of Oman and the Red Sea to defend its sovereignty and interests.

Internationally, China has voiced objections to the naval blockade. However, former US President Donald Trump claimed to have secured an agreement from Chinese President Xi Jinping to cease arms shipments to Iran, a claim previously denied by Beijing's foreign ministry. Adding to the complexities, the Financial Times reported that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard aerospace force had acquired a Chinese spy satellite in 2024, reportedly using it to target US bases in the region during the five-week conflict. Trump, who initiated the conflict with Netanyahu, continued to express confidence in a swift resolution, predicting an "amazing two days ahead" and suggesting the war could end before the ceasefire's expiry, either through US withdrawal after inflicting significant damage or via a deal with Tehran. He also forecasted a sharp decline in oil prices, which had been hovering around $95 amid peace talk uncertainties.
