Abel Tesfaye, widely known by his stage name The Weeknd, has announced a change of heart regarding his previously declared plans to retire the iconic persona. Despite revealing last year his intention to "cut The Weeknd short" due to a lack of desire for the "headspace" and the competitive "rat race" it entailed, Tesfaye now asserts he will "never disappear" from his musical identity.

Last year, when asked by Variety magazine to explain social media teasers like "The Weeknd/ The End is Near/ 8 beautiful chapters in this story" for his then-upcoming "Hurry Up Tomorrow" album, Tesfaye had indicated he was considering retiring his long-held stage name after fulfilling existing commitments. He articulated a feeling of having "mastered" the persona, stating, "No one’s gonna do the Weeknd better than me, and I’m not gonna do it better than what it is right now." This sentiment stemmed from a desire for new challenges, particularly as he branched into acting and producing with projects like "The Idol" and "Uncut Gems," believing that "everything needs to feel like a challenge." He clarified in the same interview that he wasn't considering retiring from music entirely, but rather mothballing the specific persona, needing a change without quitting music.

A pivotal moment contributing to his contemplation of retirement was a difficult performance at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium in 2022, where he lost his voice four songs in, forcing an early end to the show. Though medical checks revealed no physical abnormalities, Tesfaye interpreted the incident as a mental signal. He recounted thinking, "You lost your voice because it’s done; you said what you had to say. Don’t overstay at the party — you can end it now and live a happy life." This led him to consider leaving at his peak, with the thought: "When is the right time to leave, if not at your peak? Once you understand who I am too much, then it’s time to pivot."

However, during the recent kick-off of his three-show run in Stockholm, Tesfaye shared his updated perspective with the audience. According to fan videos, he declared, "I’ll never disappear. I love this too much to ever disappear. I tested retirement a little bit, and I don’t like the way it feels. I said, Imma be here forever with you, I’ll never disappear," even crooning the last lines like a song. This public statement signifies a clear reversal of his earlier intentions.

The "After Hours Til Dawn" tour is set to continue with upcoming performances in Stockholm, followed by a five-night run at Wembley Stadium in London, indicating that the celebrated artist is indeed far from ending his journey as The Weeknd.
