Ghana Welcomes German President for Landmark State Visit

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, embarked on a significant three-day state visit to Ghana, arriving on Sunday evening. Upon his arrival at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), President Steinmeier was formally welcomed by Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, alongside the German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshöft. This visit underscores the ongoing commitment to diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The official itinerary for President Steinmeier and his high-level delegation commenced on Monday, November 3, 2025, in Accra. The day's events began with a ceremonial inspection of a full military Guard of Honour at the Forecourt of the Presidency, a traditional mark of respect for visiting heads of state. Following this, President Steinmeier was scheduled to engage in crucial high-level meetings with his Ghanaian counterpart, President John Mahama, at the Presidency.
The core of the diplomatic engagements involved a closed-door meeting between President Steinmeier and President Mahama. This private discussion was set to precede broader bilateral talks, which would include their respective delegations in the Credentials Room. These discussions were anticipated to center on enhancing and solidifying Ghana-Germany relations, with a particular focus on key sectors such as trade, investment, technology, and comprehensive development cooperation, aiming to foster mutual growth and partnership.
Further emphasizing the warmth of the reception, a State Luncheon was arranged in honour of President Steinmeier and his accompanying delegation. This event was held at the Presidential Banquet Hall in the afternoon, providing an additional opportunity for diplomatic exchange in a more convivial setting. The visit was designed to cover various aspects of Ghana's cultural and political landscape.
On Tuesday, November 4, President Steinmeier's visit extended beyond the capital as he was scheduled to travel to Kumasi. There, a significant engagement awaited him: a meeting with the revered Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II. This meeting highlights the cultural importance and traditional leadership in Ghana. President Steinmeier was also slated to participate in other activities in Kumasi before concluding his state visit and departing on Tuesday evening, marking the end of a productive diplomatic engagement.
