Ghana Mourns Highlife Legend Daddy Lumba: Fans Defy Rains for Tributes

Ghana bid a final farewell to the legendary highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, famously known as Daddy Lumba, at a funeral ceremony held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The event drew thousands of mourners from across the country, including devoted fans and prominent political figures, all united to pay homage to an artist whose music profoundly shaped generations and remains deeply woven into Ghana's cultural fabric.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) offered a heartfelt tribute to Daddy Lumba, characterizing him as a national legend and a loyal friend of the party. Speaking to journalists at the funeral, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, underscored that the party had lost not only a cultural icon but also a committed ally whose influence extended beyond music into national politics. Nana Boakye specifically highlighted Daddy Lumba’s significant contribution to the party’s political journey, citing his role in composing and performing a campaign song for former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The final funeral rites were able to proceed following weeks of legal contention among family members, which was ultimately resolved by a decisive ruling from the Accra High Court. The court ordered the release of Daddy Lumba's body after the applicants in the case failed to raise the GH₵2 million required to sustain an injunction preventing the burial, thereby directing Transitions Funeral Home to move forward with the funeral arrangements.
Despite persistent heavy rains that threatened to disrupt the solemn occasion, thousands of fans gathered at the venue, demonstrating an unwavering determination not to let the adverse weather dampen their spirits. As downpours continued, Daddy Lumba’s timeless hits echoed through the grounds, with devotees dancing under open skies and singing along to familiar songs that have become an integral part of Ghana’s musical heritage. Although the unexpected rainfall created logistical challenges, forcing many mourners to seek refuge under canopies and others to struggle with movement, it did not diminish the atmosphere of unity and resolute celebration. This scene powerfully reflected the deep bond Daddy Lumba shared with his fans, who chose joyous tribute over frustration, even amidst discomfort and uncertainty.
Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, brisk business was recorded in Daddy Lumba paraphernalia. Vendors reported strong patronage as mourners eagerly purchased T-shirts, scarves, posters, and other memorabilia bearing the image and lyrics of the legendary musician, snapping up keepsakes to honor his memory. This robust trade in Lumba memorabilia underscored his enduring influence, proving that his legacy continues to inspire joy, unity, and devotion long after his passing.
Daddy Lumba, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most influential musicians, leaves behind a towering legacy in highlife music and popular culture, as well as a lasting imprint on the country’s political and social life. His life and music continue to resonate, fostering solidarity and togetherness among his many admirers.
