Ghana Mourns: Ga Mantse Recovers After Horrific Accident, Mahama Visits

President John Dramani Mahama made a significant visit to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday, 21st February 2026, to personally assess the recovery of the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II. The monarch was recovering from a harrowing road accident that occurred earlier in the week. Accompanied by a senior entourage, the President's visit underscored the close relationship between the current administration and the revered Ga Stool. Shortly after this high-profile visit, the Ga Mantse was officially discharged by the medical staff, having been given a clean bill of health following intensive clinical assessments.
The incident that sparked national concern and led to the King's hospitalization occurred on Tuesday, 17th February 2026. The King's vehicle was involved in a serious crash at Pai-Katanga in the Oti Region. At the time of the accident, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II was on his return journey to the capital, Accra, from Tamale. He had spent several days in the Northern Region on a private mission, at the invitation of the Ya Naa, the King of Dagbon. This visit to the Gbewaa Palace was a strategic effort aimed at deepening unity and strengthening bonds of mutual respect between the Ga State and the Dagbon Kingdom.
Despite the severity of the motor accident and its impact, the Ga Mantse reportedly escaped without serious injury, and no casualties were recorded. The Ghana Police Service provided immediate assistance at the scene, facilitating the King’s secure movement back toward Accra for further evaluation and specialized care. Upon arrival at the UGMC, the King and his entourage underwent a series of comprehensive medical checks, which ultimately confirmed their stable and very stable condition, leading to the King's prompt discharge.
Ambassador (Sir) S.J.K. Parker-Allotey, Chief of Protocol and Communications for the Office of the Ga Mantse, issued an official statement confirming the King’s stable condition and swift recovery. The statement expressed gratitude, noting, “By the grace of God, there were no casualties and with Police assistance and support of his aides on board the vehicles involved, they were all successfully evacuated to Accra, where they underwent medical checks and were discharged in very stable condition.” His Royal Majesty has since directed his office to extend profound appreciation to the emergency responders, the dedicated medical team who managed the crisis, and the general public for the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well-wishes received since the accident.
With King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II now safely back at his private residence, his discharge marks the end of a tense week for the Ga Traditional Council. The Ga State is now preparing for his first public appearance following the accident, which is highly anticipated by his people and the nation at large.
