Gen Zs Storm Kenyan Polls: IEBC Kicks Off Massive Voter Registration Drive

On June 25, 2025, Thika Road witnessed significant unrest during the Gen Z anniversary protests, where demonstrators were seen clinging to police lorries alongside administration police officers. These protests are not merely an isolated event but a clear indication of a burgeoning political storm across the nation, driven largely by young people who are now actively engaging in political discourse and action. This movement marks a significant shift, as the youth increasingly challenge a political landscape traditionally dominated by older generations and retirees.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is set to commence mass voter registration, an exercise anticipated to bring an estimated 6.3 million young voters into the fold for the 2027 General Election. This massive influx of new voters is poised to influence an election that is emerging against a backdrop of powerful calls for a “one-term” presidency, specifically aimed at thwarting President William Ruto's ambition to extend his tenure until 2032. This objective is directly inspired by the catalytic Gen Z revolt of 2024.
The collective aspiration for fundamental change, which includes the potential removal of the Kenya Kwanza administration, is heavily reliant on the enthusiastic participation of these youthful Gen Z voters. Their engagement in both the voter registration drive and the subsequent voting process will be crucial. Many young individuals have vocally expressed their firm resolve to partake in the mass voter registration, viewing it as a critical step to “send home” what they perceive as rogue political leaders. These leaders, according to the youth, are steering the country towards an intergenerational and potentially irreparable state of disarray.
