Friends Shocker! Not The Finale, But This Episode Crushed Records with 52M+ Viewers

Friends, an iconic sitcom renowned for its memorable moments throughout its extensive run, achieved its most-watched installment with the Season 2 two-part episode, “The One After the Superbowl.” This particular episode garnered over 52 million viewers, a staggering success attributed to a perfectly orchestrated blend of timing and promotion by NBC, which transformed it into a major television event.
In 1996, NBC deviated from its traditional post–Super Bowl strategy of launching new shows after Super Bowl XXX. Instead, the network decided to double down on its established hit, Friends, making “The One After the Superbowl” a full-blown spectacle rather than a typical two-part sitcom episode.
The objective was to capitalize on the massive audience by designing storylines around celebrity cameos to prevent casual viewers from changing the channel, while still keeping the core group at the center of the narrative.
The episode’s plotlines were strategically crafted to incorporate high-profile guest stars. Ross (David Schwimmer) reconnects with Marcel, his former pet monkey, now a seasoned animal actor, which leads to Hollywood antics and a parade of celebrities on set. Jean-Claude Van Damme plays himself, becoming the object of a competitive flirtation between Monica (Courteney Cox) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). Brooke Shields appears as Erika, a woman who develops an intense obsession with Joey (Matt LeBlanc) after watching him on 'Days of Our Lives', firmly believing he is his character, Dr. Drake Ramoray.
The most significant guest star was Julia Roberts, who portrayed Susie “Underpants” Moss, Chandler’s (Matthew Perry) former classmate. Her return involved a flirtatious rekindling with Chandler, subtly masking a perfectly executed grudge stemming from one of his most humiliating high school experiences.
This celebrity-packed approach proved highly effective, working exactly as NBC intended, and successfully cemented “The One After the Superbowl” as Friends’ most-watched episode across all ten seasons. While Friends was not unaccustomed to guest star cameos, this particular episode was perceived as a deliberate overload of star power.
NBC’s president, Warren Littlefield, consciously decided to “flip the script” by placing the network's hottest show in the coveted post-Super Bowl slot, recognizing that previous attempts to launch new shows in this slot had not yielded great success. The array of guest stars was a calculated part of this strategy, making the broadcast feel like a grand spectacle and maximizing audience reach on one of the year’s most lucrative ad-revenue nights.
Despite the episode’s undeniable success in viewership, it sparked a debate about the necessity of such extensive stunt casting. Many believed that Friends, a show that consistently thrived on the exceptional chemistry and talent of its six lead ensemble members, did not inherently require celebrity appearances to succeed. Interestingly, the episode itself isn't remembered for any of the series’ most iconic jokes or quotes, yet its impact on viewership was immense.
There’s also intriguing trivia surrounding the cameos: Matthew Perry played a role in convincing Julia Roberts to guest star, leading to their real-life romance shortly thereafter. Jean-Claude Van Damme later expressed his discomfort with his performance in hindsight. Brooke Shields’ appearance even led to NBC developing her own sitcom, 'Suddenly Susan', which aired from 1996 to 2000. Regardless of mixed critical reviews, “The One After the Superbowl” did not diminish the Friends franchise; instead, it served as powerful evidence of the show's immense popularity at the time and validated NBC's strategic gamble.
