France Grants Electronic Music 'Intangible Cultural Heritage' Status

Electronic music has been officially recognized as a fundamental pillar of French culture, securing its place in the national Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This acknowledgement signifies that the artform is profoundly shaping France’s artistic identity, as stated by French Culture Minister Rachida Dati. This decision follows the ministry's earlier declaration of clubs as legitimate “places of artistic expression and celebration,” further solidifying the cultural significance of electronic music within the nation.
Central to this recognition are pioneering artists such as Air, Cassius, Daft Punk, Justice, and, notably, Jean-Michel Jarre. Jarre, a revered figure, garnered special mention for his monumental contributions to the genre. In his late twenties, he crafted the masterpiece album “Oxygène” (released in 1976), featuring sweeping electronic tunes created entirely on early synthesizers without any vocals.
