Forbidden Thriller of 2024: Secretly Filmed Masterpiece Unlocked for Streaming

Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof demonstrated immense bravery in the creation of his film, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, facing direct targeting by the Iranian government. Deemed "propaganda" by authorities, Rasoulof was arrested previously for protesting the government. Despite this, he managed to film The Seed of the Sacred Fig in secret, allowing it to debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Sentenced to eight years in prison, Rasoulof dramatically fled by foot to Europe, completing the film's editing in Germany. The powerful work was subsequently submitted and nominated as Germany’s entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature, solidifying its place as an important piece of political filmmaking that draws global attention to the dire situation in Tehran.
While fictional, The Seed of the Sacred Fig is set against the backdrop of the real Iranian protests of 2022, where government critics demonstrated after a young woman's suspicious death; real footage from these events was integrated by Rasoulof to provide crucial contextual information. The narrative centers on Iman (Missagh Zareh), a lawyer newly appointed as a federal judge within the Revolutionary Court, who is issued a gun for self-defense. Iman becomes increasingly agitated by his work, as he is tasked with executing orders from higher-ranking officials and is forbidden from disclosing any details about his job to his wife, Najmeh (Soheila Golestani), who is raising their adolescent daughters, Rezvan (Mahsa Rostami) and Sana (Setareh Maleki).
The family's situation spirals into chaos when Iman discovers his gun is missing, leading him to question the loyalty of those he thought he could trust, including his own family. Iman's paranoia intensifies, knowing that any mistake could lead to severe consequences, especially since the registered gun could be traced back to him if involved in a crime. He struggles with a profound lack of trust, fearing both betrayal from other government employees seeking his position and suspicions towards his family, particularly as Rezvan shows a growing interest in the revolutionary movement. Furthermore, Iman is terrified of the authoritative regime's power but also fears being targeted by protesters should his true employment become known.
The Seed of the Sacred Fig profoundly explores how governmental practices in Iran lead to the splintering of families, focusing on how paranoia and fear drive Iman's irrational actions. The film examines Iran's period of political stagnation, where individuals who disagree with the government are forced into isolation. While Rezvan finds solidarity among like-minded individuals on social media, Iman's obsession with avoiding political conversations leads him to prevent his family from watching news or discussing controversial topics. The film portrays how a man with no support system could be driven to place his family in such intense situations. Its meticulous storytelling ensures that nearly three hours of runtime are filled with narrative advancement and character revelation. The danger Rasoulof faced underscores cinema's potent ability to inspire sympathy for protesters and influence important conversations about experiences many viewers might otherwise remain ignorant of, cementing Rasoulof's place among today's great filmmakers.
Directed and written by Mohammad Rasoulof, The Seed of the Sacred Fig stars Soheila Golestani and Missagh Zareh. It has a runtime of 168 minutes and was released on May 24, 2024.
