Football Fury: Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended by Portugal After Shocking Walkout

Cristiano Ronaldo, the esteemed 41-year-old football icon, has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following the initiation of disciplinary proceedings against him. The FPF announced the urgent case on Saturday, confirming Ronaldo's suspension pending a final decision on his punishment. This action stems from his controversial decision to walk out on the national team, an act for which he later issued a public apology.

Ronaldo's departure from Portugal's Nations League squad occurred after a series of disagreements with national team coach Jorge Jesus. The first incident involved him being made to warm up as a substitute but not being brought on during the September 27 match against Norway. The tension escalated when he learned he would not start against Denmark in the October 1 match. Ronaldo accused Coach Jesus of breaking his word regarding promised game time and failing to address the situation publicly as agreed upon.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star, known as the all-time top goalscorer and record appearance-maker in men’s international football, left the camp in Copenhagen without authorization. According to both Portuguese media and The Mirror, FPF regulations automatically triggered a provisional suspension in such circumstances. A disciplinary council is now tasked with determining the precise length of the ban, which could range from one to six months.

Despite the potential ban, ESPN has reported that an extended punishment is considered unlikely given the mitigating circumstances, including Ronaldo's public apology. Should the ban exceed one month, Ronaldo might miss Portugal’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Denmark on November 14 and Wales on November 17. He has, however, expressed his unwavering commitment to the national team, stating he would be available to play once any potential punishment was served.

In his apology, Ronaldo acknowledged his mistake in leaving the camp and accepted the federation's right to sanction his conduct. Coach Jorge Jesus, when asked about Ronaldo's statement, chose not to engage in a public dispute, instead focusing on his work with the national team. Jesus had previously indicated that he would consider Ronaldo for international duty if the forward was actively playing for his club and expressed interest in being called up, leaving the door open for his return.

Portugal's national team has performed strongly in the Nations League, winning all four of their matches and qualifying for the quarterfinals with two games to spare. Meanwhile, Ronaldo has returned to club action with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, scoring in their 3-0 victory against Diriyah in a Saudi Pro League match, marking his 980th career goal.
