First Look: 2026 Jeep Cherokee Breaks Cover – Specs, Price, and Heritage Revival!

Jeep is re-entering the white-hot compact crossover SUV segment with the all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee, following a three-year absence. This strategic hiatus, reminiscent of Ford's Model T production stoppage in 1927 that cost it significant market share, has prompted questions about the new Cherokee's market positioning. However, the shifting societal and regulatory environment may mean this belated model is better positioned for success than an earlier design might have been.
The 2026 Cherokee marks a significant design departure from its 2023 predecessor. Design leader Vince Galante drew inspiration from the original XJ-generation Jeep Cherokee, known for pioneering the unibody SUV segment. The new 'KM Cherokee' adopts a boxier aesthetic, incorporating a squared-off seven-slot grille flanked by U-shaped daytime running lights that evoke the original rectangular sealed-beams. Standard 18-inch and optional 20-inch wheels are housed within XJ-inspired trapezoidal arches, while the taillamps wrap around the corners, featuring a horizontal orientation suggestive of Jeep’s iconic jerrycan look. The upright D-pillar, embellished with a Germanic Hofmeister kink, directly addresses a key complaint of the outgoing KL Cherokee: insufficient cargo room, which has now increased by 25 percent.
Moving from Fiat-Chrysler’s Compact-Wide platform to Stellantis' STLA Large platform results in a substantial increase in dimensions. The overall length stretches by 6.1 inches on axles that are 6.5 inches farther apart, making it one of the largest compact SUVs, comparable to models like the Honda CR-V, Ford Bronco Sport, Toyota RAV4, and Chevy Equinox. Width is up by 1.5 inches, while height drops by 0.3 inch, with nearly every interior dimension seeing an upward adjustment to improve class competitiveness. The STLA Large platform also provides flexibility for future powertrain options, including battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, or pure combustion variants. Upper trim levels demonstrate Jeep’s commitment to elevated materials quality, with top-line Overland models featuring fancy perforation patterns on seat inserts and the top three trims offering an 'Arctic' interior color scheme.
At launch, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be offered exclusively with an all-new hybrid powertrain. This system features a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder engine producing 177 hp at 5,500 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. It is mated to a two-motor planetary combiner hybrid system, which stores power in a 1.1-kWh lithium-ion (NCM) battery slung under the rear passenger compartment. The electric motor contributes 33 hp and 9 lb-ft of torque. The net total output for the system is 210 hp and 230 lb-ft. This hybrid design leverages a technology originally patented by Toyota and licensed by Ford, now made royalty-free by Toyota through 2030, which Stellantis has seized as an opportunity.
The new Cherokee significantly improves upon its predecessors in fuel efficiency. While official numbers are pending, Jeep estimates EPA city/highway/combined ratings of 42/33/37 mpg, a substantial increase over the old model’s 20–21/26–29/22–24 mpg. This efficiency translates to a projected range of 507 miles from its 13.7-gallon tank, a considerable improvement over the previous 15.8-gallon tank’s 348–379 miles. The new Cherokee's 3,500-pound tow capacity is just 500 pounds shy of the old 2.0L turbo's, making it a capable option for light towing needs.
All-wheel drive is standard on the Cherokee, featuring Active Drive 1, which utilizes a power takeoff from the transverse hybrid powertrain to drive the rear axle on demand. This system disconnects when not in use to reduce friction and save fuel, automatically re-engaging when greater traction is required. It lacks a dedicated low gear or locking differentials at launch, but future revisions, including a Trailhawk off-road version, are expected. Active Drive 1 offers Auto, Sand, Snow, and Mud programs, with a front–rear torque split varying from 100/0 to 50/50. Minimum ground clearance is 8.0 inches, and it boasts a 19.6-degree approach angle, an 18.8-degree breakover angle, and a class-leading 29.4-degree departure angle, indicating genuine SUV capability.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be released in phases, with the top two trims launching late this year, followed by the two most affordable ones in early 2026. The base model starts at $36,995, followed by the Laredo at $39,995, the Limited at $42,495, and the top-tier Overland at $45,995. These prices position the Cherokee at a premium within the compact hybrid SUV segment. For instance, it is $2,945 more expensive than a base 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD, and significantly pricier than some Kia Sportage Hybrid trims. While its mechanical AWD offers improved off-road and all-weather performance, Jeep appears to be banking on pent-up demand to justify its pricing. However, given its competitive landscape, some market adjustments or incentives might be necessary to align with established players, especially since the Cherokee is hybrid-only, unlike many competitors offering cheaper non-hybrid options.
