FIFA The Best Awards Controversy: Nnadozie Snubbed, Dembele Triumphs, and a Barcelona Star Makes History!
)
The latest FIFA The Best awards have celebrated outstanding achievements in football, with Barcelona's Aitana Bonmati and Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele taking home the top individual accolades for women's and men's players, respectively. Additionally, Chelsea and England's Hannah Hampton was crowned The Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper for 2025, capping a remarkable year for the shot-stopper.
Aitana Bonmati, the prolific Barcelona midfielder and 27-year-old Spain international, secured her third consecutive FIFA The Best Women's Player of the Year award. This historic win places her alongside Lionel Messi, as she now matches his record of three FIFA The Best Award victories, having previously emulated his achievement of winning three consecutive Ballon d'Ors. Her consistent excellence continues to define her as a dominant force in women's football.
On the men's side, Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele was recognized as FIFA The Best Men's Player of the Year. The 28-year-old completed an exceptional season by adding this coveted FIFA prize to his individual trophy cabinet, having already clinched the prestigious Ballon d'Or earlier in the year, notably besting Barcelona's Lamine Yamal in that race. This recognition underscores the magnificent season Dembele experienced, cementing his status as the world's best.
The Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper 2025 award went to Hannah Hampton, the 25-year-old Chelsea and England star. Hampton's triumph marks a significant milestone, as she becomes only the second English player to win this award, following Mary Earps' successes in 2022 and 2023. Her standout year included a memorable UEFA Women’s EURO campaign where she heroically saved two penalties in shootouts against Sweden and Spain, earning her the Goalkeeper of the Tournament honors. At club level, Hampton was instrumental in Chelsea's domestic treble, contributing to their Women’s Super League, FA Cup, and League Cup victories. Upon receiving the award, Hampton expressed her gratitude, stating, "Thank you very much to everyone who voted. It's greatly appreciated, and it really means a lot. [Thank you] to Sarina [Wiegman] and to Sonia [Bompastor] for the belief in me this year." She emerged victorious from a competitive shortlist that included nominees such as Ann-Katrin Berger, Cata Coll, Christiane Endler, Anna Moorhouse, Chiamaka Nnadozie, and Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
Despite missing out on The Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper award, Nigerian Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie had a commendable year. The Paris FC goalkeeper was celebrated with the 2025 CAF Women's Goalkeeper of the Year award. Her exceptional performance in the Coupe de France final saw her keep a clean sheet against PSG and save two penalties in the shootout to secure the trophy for her club. Internationally, Nnadozie played a crucial role in Nigeria's WAFCON title win, achieving four clean sheets in six matches, including a dominant display against hosts Morocco. The voting process for The Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper award involved national team coaches and captains, journalists, and fans, with each group contributing 25 percent to the final tally.
