Fernandes' Historic Feat! Man United Star Equals Premier League Assist Record
Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes has achieved a significant milestone, equalling the Premier League record for the most assists in a single season. This feat was accomplished during his team's 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, where he registered his 20th assist of the campaign. The record-equalling moment occurred in the 76th minute when Fernandes delivered a precise ball across the box, which was converted by Bryan Mbeumo at Old Trafford. This places Fernandes alongside Arsenal's Thierry Henry (2002-03) and Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne (2019-20) in the Premier League history books.
While Fernandes has matched the record, a closer look at his assists reveals a different pattern compared to his predecessors. Only 10 of his 20 assists this season have come from open play, contrasting with Henry's 18 and De Bruyne's 17. The United captain acknowledged the team's effort in helping him reach this milestone, stating, "Everyone knew that it was important that I could get another assist at least. They've been trying everything they can to score from my passes." He also recalled a previous instance on May 3 during United's 3-2 win over Liverpool where a potential assist was not awarded by Opta, the Premier League's official statistics partner, despite Fantasy Premier League acknowledging it, due to Liverpool goalkeeper Freddie Woodman making contact with the ball before it reached Benjamin Sesko.
The match against Nottingham Forest was crucial for Manchester United, as the 3-2 victory at Old Trafford mathematically confirmed their third-place finish in the Premier League. Luke Shaw opened the scoring for the hosts within five minutes, netting his first goal in over three years with a well-placed effort. Despite an early chance for Mbeumo hitting the post, Forest found an equalizer in the 53rd minute through Morato, assisted by an excellent cross from Elliot Anderson. However, United quickly regained the lead two minutes later when Matheus Cunha scored, a goal upheld after a VAR review regarding a handball claim in the buildup.
The pivotal moment of the game saw Fernandes secure his record-equalling assist when Mbeumo finally broke his goal drought, scoring United's third. Although Morgan Gibbs-White scored the 1,000th Premier League goal of the campaign for Forest to make it 3-2, Fernandes nearly broke the assist record shortly after, delivering an exceptional swerving pass to Patrick Dorgu, but it was not converted. United concluded the match with a flurry of missed chances in stoppage time. The match also saw a fitting send-off for Casemiro, who is departing the club this summer, receiving a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd.
On a personal level, this season has been highly successful for Fernandes. He was crowned the 2026 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association, narrowly surpassing Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice with 45% of the votes and becoming the first United player to receive the award since Wayne Rooney in 2010. Manager Michael Carrick, who is expected to be permanently appointed, guided his team to a convincing display, trusting his system and making late substitutions. Under Carrick, United have amassed more points than any other Premier League team since his tenure began, highlighting a significant renaissance.
Key player performances from the match included Senne Lammens (6) in goal, Luke Shaw (7) for his goal and defensive efforts, and Lisandro Martínez (7) for a tactically astute display. Harry Maguire (6) commanded the back four, while Diogo Dalot (7) created numerous chances from the right flank. In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo (6) showed energetic commitment, and Casemiro (7) delivered an impressive performance, breaking up play and progressing the ball forward. Matheus Cunha (8) was bright in possession and scored a crucial goal, while Amad Diallo (5) struggled to provide enough going forward. Bryan Mbeumo (5) ended his goal drought with United's third goal. Substitutes Joshua Zirkzee, Patrick Dorgu, and Mason Mount were introduced late and contributed to the team's efforts, with Dorgu almost scoring from a Fernandes pass. With one game remaining this term, away at Brighton, Fernandes has a final opportunity to surpass the league's single-season assist record.
