Fayose Blasts PDP Leaders as 'Undertakers' in Scathing Attack

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has unleashed a blistering critique against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing its current leadership as "undertakers" presiding over the party’s steady decline. Speaking in Ado-Ekiti, Fayose lamented that the PDP once Nigeria’s dominant ruling party has devolved into a fractured and directionless entity, consumed by internal crises, leadership failures, and self-serving ambitions.
Painting a grim portrait, Fayose asserted that the PDP is now in a “terminal comatose” state, with little chance of revival. He directly blamed acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum and his allies for steering the party toward collapse, accusing them of inflicting irreparable damage. “The PDP has lost its soul and direction,” he said, alleging that some leaders have turned the once-powerful political movement into “a burial ground for ambition.” Premium Times earlier reported similar internal tensions within the opposition party.
Fayose’s frustration echoed through his remarks: “There is no hope of PDP coming back for now. Even the captains of the ship are jumping from one bed to another. Who will hold the party together? The current NWC are undertakers who have come to bury the PDP.” Comparing the party’s state to a patient on intensive life support, he lamented, “There’s no sign of life.” His comments come amid rising defections and waning morale among PDP loyalists.
The former governor also reacted to the suspension of Umar Damagum and the appointment of Alhaji Mohammed Abdurahman as acting national chairman, calling it yet another chapter in the PDP’s seemingly endless leadership saga. Fayose accused Damagum of incompetence and political manipulation, arguing that his exit was “long overdue and good riddance to bad rubbish.” He warned that Damagum’s fate could mirror that of former chairman Iyorchia Ayu, who was ousted amid internal revolt and litigation, a pattern that continues to define the party’s instability, according to The Cable.
Despite his sharp rebuke, Fayose offered cautious optimism, expressing hope that Abdurahman could act as the “doctor” capable of reviving the PDP from its political coma. He urged the new leadership to unite aggrieved members, conduct long-overdue state congresses, and organize a national convention in line with the party’s constitution. “Extraordinary actions are needed to breathe life back into this party,” he said. Whether those actions will come, observers say, may determine if the PDP can reclaim its footing ahead of the 2027 elections, as noted in a recent Channels TV political analysis.
