Fatal Crash Rocks Kenya: Cyrus Jirongo's Family Demands Foul Play Probe

The sudden and tragic death of former Lugari MP and veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo in a road accident has taken a significant turn, as his family and political allies openly reject the official police narrative. They are demanding a thorough, independent investigation into the circumstances of his passing. Jirongo, a highly influential and controversial figure in Kenyan politics, died on Saturday, December 13, 2025, in a head-on collision involving his Mercedes-Benz and a passenger bus on the notoriously dangerous Nairobi-Nakuru Highway near Naivasha. While police quickly categorized the incident as a traffic fatality, the family remains unconvinced, pointing to several inconsistencies that they believe raise the specter of foul play.
The most significant point of contention revolves around the location and timing of the accident versus Jirongo’s stated last movements. The police report places the accident at approximately 3:00 a.m. in Karai, Naivasha, a significant distance from Nairobi. However, the chairman of the funeral committee, former Westlands MP Fred Gumo, disclosed that Jirongo had left a meeting in Karen, Nairobi, to head to his home in Gigiri, Nairobi, a relatively short journey. “He was travelling from Karen to his home in Gigiri. How did he end up several kilometres away in Naivasha?” Gumo asked, demanding answers. Fresh doubts have emerged over these final movements, with the funeral committee, supported by George Khaniri, pressing investigators for a clearer reconstruction of Jirongo’s last hours. The family struggles to align the official account with Jirongo’s stated travel plans that night.
Questions have also been raised by his party’s leadership regarding why a prominent politician like Jirongo was traveling alone in the dead of night without his usual driver or security detail. The United Democratic Party (UDP) Busia branch, which Jirongo led, publicly challenged investigators to establish who he spoke to and what prompted his sudden, late-night journey out of Nairobi.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has confirmed that he met Jirongo earlier that evening at a restaurant in Karen during Jamhuri Day celebrations. Wetang’ula stated they spoke between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., describing the meeting as a routine interaction with nothing unusual to suggest it would be their last encounter. He only learned of Jirongo’s death the following morning.
The family is calling for a meticulous, forensic audit of the evidence, urging police to scrutinize CCTV footage from the highway and the vicinity of his last known location to establish a clear timeline of his final hours. An autopsy is scheduled to provide medical clarity on the cause of death. Simultaneously, public pressure is mounting on the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to consider an inquest—a formal legal inquiry—to independently establish the facts surrounding the death.
According to a report filed at Naivasha Police Station, Jirongo died after his Mercedes-Benz was involved in a head-on collision with a passenger bus. Police say Jirongo was driving from Nakuru towards Nairobi when his vehicle failed to keep its lane and collided with an oncoming Climax Coaches bus travelling from Nairobi to Busia, carrying 65 passengers. Jirongo, 64, sustained fatal head injuries and died at the scene.
Adding another dimension to the situation, former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has come out in defence of the bus driver, identified as 52-year-old Tirus Kamau Githinji. Sonko stated the driver acted to protect his passengers and should not be blamed for the crash, noting that the law shields drivers who make split-second decisions in emergency situations. Sonko claimed Jirongo’s vehicle failed to give way and pledged to offer legal assistance to the driver should he be arrested, declaring, “That particular driver, I will be the first one to bail him out.”
Jirongo’s long and complex political career, marked by his outspoken nature and history of taking bold, often controversial, stances, provides a backdrop for the suspicions. For many, the sudden, violent end to the life of a man who had often courted high-stakes political and financial disputes simply “does not add up.” As the nation mourns the loss of a major figure in its political history, the focus has shifted from mere condolence to a demand for justice. The family insists that nothing short of a transparent and conclusive investigation will quell the widespread speculation and bring closure to a tragic chapter.
