Emerging Talent: Thuto Rantao's Debut EP Ignites Botswana Music Scene

Gaborone is buzzing with excitement as Thuto Rantao officially launches her music career with the debut EP, "Baloi". The daughter of acclaimed jazz artiste Kearoma Rantao, Thuto introduces a distinctive sound that fuses traditional Southern African rhythms with contemporary pop, dance, and afrobeat production techniques, creating a style that is both globally appealing and deeply rooted in African heritage.

The EP features three tracks: "Baloi," "Wena," and "Sdoba". The title track, "Baloi," which translates loosely to witches or sorcerers, serves as a metaphor for unseen forces shaping an individual’s journey, including societal, cultural, and personal influences. Thuto describes the song as a celebration of embracing one’s own power and potential, marking the start of her bold musical expression.

The 27-year-old’s path to this debut has been shaped by both challenges and triumphs. She gained prominence after winning the My African Dream competition in 2021. Her earlier stint on Botswana’s local singing show "My Star Botswana" ended in elimination but laid the groundwork for her artistic growth. Thuto credits her mother and The Women of Jazz as key sources of inspiration and support throughout her journey.

Determined to avoid being confined to a single genre, Thuto aims to demonstrate versatility and reach a diverse audience. The release of "Baloi" marks the official launch of a promising career, with upcoming collaborations set for December, including tracks with Sal Angel ("Betrayed"), Jungle Yard, Motlha ("Wena"), and even her mother, Kearoma Rantao, on "Ina Lebe – Ke a roma." Looking ahead, Thuto plans to release a full album in 2026, promising more music and exciting collaborations for fans.
