Economic Turmoil: Ghana's Cedi Plunges Amid New Exchange Rates

The Ghanaian Cedi has experienced a notable, albeit slight, depreciation against several major international currencies, according to the latest exchange rates released by the Bank of Ghana on Thursday, 11th December 2025. This movement indicates persistent pressure on the local currency amidst high demand for foreign exchange.

Specifically, the United States Dollar is now trading at ₵11.45, reflecting an increase from its lower levels recorded earlier in the week. Similarly, the British Pound has seen a marginal rise, now exchanging for ₵15.26. The Euro has also followed this upward trend, with its selling rate reaching ₵13.33, demonstrating a consistent pattern of depreciation for the cedi across these key currencies.

The Bank of Ghana clarified that these published figures represent the average interbank exchange rates. These rates were meticulously compiled and used by commercial banks at the close of trading on the preceding day, Wednesday, 10th December 2025. The consistent upward movement in the selling rates of the US dollar, British pound, and Euro against the cedi suggests an ongoing challenge for the cedi to maintain stability. This situation is primarily attributed to the sustained high demand for major foreign currencies within the market, which continues to exert downward pressure on the Ghanaian currency.
