Diva's Delight: Mariah Carey Speaks Out on Landmark Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Nomination

Music icon Mariah Carey has once again found herself on the prestigious nominee list for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's 2026 induction, marking her third consecutive nomination. Expressing her excitement, Carey admitted it felt "great" to see her name, calling it "an unchecked box" in her illustrious career. While primarily known for her pop and R&B hits, Carey is far from a stranger to the rock genre. Throughout her career, she has famously lent her voice to rock covers such as Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is,” which became a significant hit in South America, Journey’s “Open Arms,” and Def Leppard’s “Bringing On the Heartbreak,” a beloved track from her 2002 album, Charmbracelet.
Carey's most profound foray into rock, however, remains a closely guarded secret for many years. She points to Someone’s Ugly Daughter, an alternative rock album she secretly recorded in 1995 under the pseudonym "Chick," as her most "rocking release." Although the album was initially released with another artist performing the lead vocals, Carey's creative vision and involvement in the project were undeniable. This clandestine project highlights a side of her artistry that she has long desired to showcase, often recalling being told during her ascent to "stay in her lane."
The significance of Someone’s Ugly Daughter was recently brought into the spotlight when Mariah Carey was honored as this year’s MusiCares Person of the Year during Grammys week in Los Angeles. Attendees were treated to a live realization of the project, with Foo Fighters covering “Hermit” and Taylor Momsen performing “Love Is a Scam,” both tracks from the sole Chick release. Carey expressed immense joy and gratitude for the experience, reflecting, "That was amazing. Just to feel that whole thing, I don’t even know how to express it.” She has also hinted at the possibility of fans finally hearing her original vocals on those tracks, stating, "I want to give people a taste of Someone’s Ugly Daughter… I think it is pretty funny, because I created this thing and what do you do? It’s just there.”
Beyond her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame aspirations and rock ventures, Carey continues to achieve new milestones. She recently performed a medley of “Volare” and “Nothing Is Impossible” – singing both in Italian – at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony. This performance, which she described as an "exciting" addition to her repertoire and "just a moment," came on the heels of her 16th studio album, Here for It All, released last September. The album delivered another chart-topper to her impressive tally, with the single “In Your Feelings” reaching No. 1 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart.
Carey firmly believes her unparalleled success is a strong case for her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. When asked why she deserves the honor, she humorously yet confidently responded, “I would say they should check out the 19 [Billboard Hot 100] No. 1s… not everybody has those to their name.” Her historic count of chart-topping hits underscores her lasting impact and undeniable legacy in music, demonstrating that she has indeed never stayed in one lane.
