A significant political realignment has unfolded in Delta State, as several leaders of the Labour Party (LP), including its 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Deacon Kawhariebie Ken Pela, have officially defected to the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC). This move also includes former National Assembly, State House of Assembly, and local government candidates who have formally joined the ADC, signaling a major shift in the state's political landscape.

The defection ceremony, held in Asaba, was marked by a large and enthusiastic gathering from across Delta State. This event is seen as a clear indication of ADC's intent to challenge the entrenched ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and to reshape the political narrative within Delta State. This local political realignment mirrors a broader national trend, highlighted by the recent defection of LP's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the ADC in Enugu.

Austin Okolie, the Chief host and Delta State chairman of ADC, extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests, which included National, Zonal, and State executives, stakeholders, and former members of the Labour Party and the Obidient movement, led by Deacon Pela. Okolie emphasized the historical significance of the gathering, stating, "Today’s gathering is historic. It represents a major political realignment in Delta state and a bold signal to Nigeria that a new progressive coalition is taking shape ahead of the 2027 general elections across Nigeria." He further noted that the presence of national and Zonal representatives underscored ADC's growth at the grassroots level and its alignment with the party's national vision.

In an emotionally charged address during the ceremony, Ken Pela articulated the core reasons behind his decision to switch parties. He stressed the urgent need for a political system anchored in integrity, dedicated service, and genuine institutional reform, rather than one driven by mere loyalty or rhetoric. Pela criticized the prevailing political culture that often rewards familiarity over genuine competence and expressed concern over the increasing concentration of power, which he believes undermines democratic pluralism. He stated, "Delta State is richly endowed but weighed down by broken trust and political culture that rewards noise over substance. We need a politics anchored in responsibility and service. That is why I have chosen ADC, a platform that places values above individuals and judges governance by results, not rhetoric.”

Pela also brought attention to the broader national crises confronting Nigeria, including pervasive insecurity and severe economic hardship, pointing out that over 130 million Nigerians are currently living in multi-dimensional poverty. In response to these significant challenges, he called for a united front committed to restoring trust and hope across the nation. His declaration was formally concluded with his signed resignation from the Labour Party and a solemn commitment to uphold ADC’s constitution, values, and ideals, reflecting a personal pledge towards integrity, accountability, and responsible leadership.

Receiving the defectors on behalf of the ADC, Elder Festus Igbinoba, the party’s National Chief Whip and representative of National Chairman David Mark, highlighted that Ken Pela’s move signifies a broader trend of principled leaders gravitating towards the ADC. He commented, “This is a convergence of values. The ADC continues to attract leaders dedicated to discipline, institutional growth, and people-focused governance.” Igbinoba expressed his delight at the addition of such influential members, encouraging them to abide by the party’s constitution and collaborate towards future electoral success and effective administration.

Echoing these sentiments, Senator Andrew Uchendu, ADC Deputy National Chairman, welcomed Ken Pela, noting that his decision to join the party demonstrates its expanding appeal nationwide.
