Death and Devastation: Kenya's Deadly Floods Claim Lives, Paralyze Nairobi

Heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding across Nairobi, Kenya, and its environs since Friday, March 6, 2026, leading to significant loss of life, widespread displacement, and extensive damage to property and infrastructure. Initially, Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda confirmed 10 fatalities, a number that tragically rose to 23 by Saturday, March 7, according to National Police Service Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga. The victims perished from being swept away by raging floodwaters or electrocution, with emergency teams successfully rescuing 29 people from various locations across the city.

The floods have severely impacted numerous parts of Nairobi, including Westlands, Dagoretti, Embakasi, Kibra, Roysambu, Kasarani, Huruma, Mathare, Baba Dogo, Lucky Summer, Lang’ata, South B, South C, Nairobi West, Kahawa West, Umoja, Utawala, and the Central Business District. Major roads like Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road, Mbagathi Way, Ngong Road, Thika Superhighway, and Kiambu Road were blocked, leading to heavy traffic and widespread disruption. At least 71 vehicles were swept away or submerged, indicating the scale of the destruction.
