Deadly Diphtheria Outbreak Strikes Plateau, Nigeria: 15 Dead, Over 100 Infected

An outbreak of diphtheria in parts of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has tragically claimed 15 lives among 117 suspected cases reported by health authorities. The Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO) for Jos North, Baks Bulus, confirmed on Tuesday that these deaths occurred within a mere three-day period following the outbreak. Mr. Bulus issued a stern warning that the number of cases could escalate if immediate and effective measures are not implemented to contain the rapidly spreading disease.

According to data compiled from affected communities, 117 individuals are suspected of having contracted diphtheria, with 15 confirmed fatalities. Among those who succumbed to the illness were two siblings, aged between 12 and 17 years, underscoring the severe impact of the disease on vulnerable populations.

Diphtheria, as explained by Mr. Bulus, is a bacterial infection capable of person-to-person transmission, primarily through close contact with an infected individual. He highlighted that sharing personal items, such as utensils and towels, significantly elevates the risk of transmission. The DSNO emphasized that vaccination remains one of the most critical and effective strategies for preventing severe complications and deaths associated with diphtheria.

Mr. Bulus stressed the importance of vaccination for children, stating, "For children who have been vaccinated, the effects may be milder and may not lead to death. But for a child who has not been fully vaccinated or has not completed the required doses, it can be deadly." In light of this, he urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children receive all recommended doses of diphtheria-containing vaccines.

To mitigate further spread, residents of the affected communities are advised to uphold stringent hygiene practices, avoid overcrowded public spaces, and promptly seek medical attention if they experience symptoms indicative of diphtheria. Mr. Bulus specifically cautioned against self-medication or exclusive reliance on patent medicine vendors. He recommended visiting primary healthcare centers, where appropriate structures and trained personnel are available to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment.

In response to the crisis, health workers have been deployed to the affected communities to intensify disease surveillance efforts, sensitize residents about preventive measures, and support ongoing initiatives to halt further transmission. Efforts to gather additional information from the Plateau State Ministry of Health proved unsuccessful, as the State Epidemiologist, Maren Job, did not respond to calls.
