DC Universe Shocker: James Gunn Reveals Next Directorial Ventures

James Gunn's DC Universe is actively unfolding, with recent developments including the second season of John Cena's Peacemaker, which made significant revelations and ended on a cliffhanger, and the animated series Creature Commandos. A pivotal component of Gunn's vision is the highly anticipated live-action film "Superman," set to premiere on July 11, 2025. Directed and written by James Gunn, with Peter Safran as producer, this film will star David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. It also features Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific emerging from his ship at Fort Kramer, with a runtime of 130 minutes. This foundational movie is designed to introduce key elements of the new DCU narrative.
Looking further ahead, Gunn has confirmed plans for "Man of Tomorrow," scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. This project, which Gunn will also write and direct, is intended to advance the story of Superman and Lex Luthor. While it serves as a continuation, Gunn has been careful to distinguish it from a conventional "Superman 2," stating that "Man of Tomorrow will not be the same as Superman" and emphasizing its unique approach, focusing deeply on Lex's story alongside Superman's. This aligns with his preference for distinct narratives across his filmography, comparing it to his approach with the "Guardians of the Galaxy" series.
Beyond these immediate projects, James Gunn has a comprehensive, long-term blueprint for the DC Universe. He openly teased knowing "the next few" projects he intends to direct, indicating a deep personal investment in shaping the DCU's core narrative. Gunn explained that a "bigger story" is being woven throughout the universe, which he refers to as "Salvation." This overarching saga will interconnect various characters and storylines, including Rick Flag, Lex, and Superman, ensuring that while individual entries can stand alone, they also contribute to a grander, unified narrative. This strategic approach highlights his commitment to a cohesive and expansive cinematic universe.
In addition to the central Superman narrative, the DCU slate includes other eagerly awaited projects such as Milly Alcock's Supergirl and Tom Rhys Harries' Clayface. Gunn’s multifaceted role as a creative architect and director underscores his dedication to crafting a compelling and interconnected DC Universe, with many unannounced plans still in store for fans who are encouraged to stay tuned for future updates.
