This moment showcased Nigerian enterprise on a global stage, emphasizing a blend of music, business, and a long-standing personal friendship. The IPO offers everyday investors a chance to participate in the world-scale Lekki refinery project.
New York City's iconic Times Square recently became the stage for a significant moment of Nigerian excellence, as Afrobeats superstar Davido and Africa's wealthiest man, Aliko Dangote, made a joint appearance during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) week. The duo stood prominently beneath the massive Nasdaq digital billboard, which illuminated with a major announcement: the official public share offering for the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals.
This powerful collaboration brought together two distinct realms of global influence – music royalty and an industrial powerhouse – effectively spotlighting African enterprise on one of the world's most famous platforms. The billboard proudly displayed the message, “Made in Nigeria. Built for the World,” symbolizing a defining milestone for West African business and industry.
The historic initial public offering (IPO) offers retail investors a unique opportunity to own a stake in the world-scale Lekki refinery project. Running from September 14th through October 13th, 2026, the public offer includes 4.1 billion ordinary shares available at ₦525 per share. With an accessible minimum subscription threshold of just 10 shares (₦5,250), the IPO aims to empower young investors, finance enthusiasts, and the broader Nigerian public to directly participate in their nation’s industrial growth story.
Beyond the business significance, the joint appearance highlighted a deep-rooted personal connection. Aliko Dangote has been a close family friend of the Adeleke family (Davido's family) for decades, with a notable anecdote recalling Dangote driving a young Davido home from the hospital after his birth. This enduring family bond was evident as they posed for photos with thumbs-up gestures under the flashing lights of Times Square.
Their individual styles for the city stroll also garnered attention. Davido showcased a high-fashion, longline silhouette, layering a dramatic floor-length dark duster coat over a crisp, unbuttoned white shirt and black trousers. The coat's metallic gold hardware buttons added a sharp, modern edge, complemented by framed dark sunglasses and polished shoes. Dangote, in contrast, opted for classic corporate tailoring, wearing a neatly cut grey patterned two-piece suit, a light blue dress shirt, a textured tie, and black leather loafers.
This high-profile moment, featuring Nigerian music and business leaders standing together under a billion-dollar home-grown campaign in Times Square, underscored the inspiring potential of African enterprise and collaboration on a global scale.
