Crisis Deepens: Parliament Orders Urgent Sh10 Billion Lifeline for Ailing Hospitals!
The Kenyan Parliament has issued a crucial directive calling for the settlement of up to Sh10 billion in outstanding debts owed by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). This significant action is primarily aimed at alleviating the substantial financial strain currently experienced by numerous medical facilities across the country. Additionally, it seeks to restore public confidence in the ongoing and critical transition from the NHIF to the newly established Social Health Authority (SHA).
This directive is not merely a recommendation but is firmly embedded within a comprehensive report produced by the National Assembly Health Committee. The committee's work involved a meticulous assessment of how funds designated for the Social Health Authority have been utilized since the scheme's inception. Furthermore, the report meticulously details an examination of the various challenges that health facilities have been confronting, particularly those related to delayed or outstanding payments from the legacy NHIF system.
The seriousness and urgency of these matters were highlighted by the appearance of Mercy Mwangangi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Social Health Authority (SHA), before the National Assembly Public Investments Committee on Social Services, Administration and Agriculture. Her session at Bunge Towers, Nairobi, on October 22, 2025, signifies the parliamentary oversight and the dedicated efforts being made to ensure the financial stability and operational success of Kenya's healthcare system during this pivotal transitional phase.
