Crawford vs Canelo: Injury Scare and Netflix Showdown Looms!

Two of boxing's most dominant figures, Canelo Alvarez and Terence "Bud" Crawford, are set to collide in a highly anticipated, once-in-a-generation showdown on September 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. This monumental clash will see Canelo Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs), the reigning WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF super middleweight champion, put his undisputed titles on the line against the undefeated, four-division king Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs). Crawford is making a significant move up to 168 pounds for this bout, aiming to make history.
Canelo, 35, currently ranked No. 8 in ESPN's pound-for-pound list, enters the fight after defeating William Scull in May, a victory that secured his status as the undisputed 168-pound champion for the second time in his illustrious career. Crawford, 37, ESPN's third-ranked pound-for-pound boxer, will be ending a yearlong hiatus, having last fought in August 2024 when he took the WBA junior middleweight title from Israil Madrimov. This southpaw's move to super middleweight is a testament to his ambition and competitive spirit.
The fight coverage is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 13, with the main card likely starting at 8 p.m. ET and main-event ring walks following at 11 p.m. ET. Boxing fans globally can watch this historic event live and exclusively on Netflix. The full card also includes several exciting matchups: Callum Walsh vs. Fernando Vargas Jr., Christian Mbilli vs. Lester Martinez, Mohammed Alakel vs. John Ornelas, Serhii Bohachuk vs. Brandon Adams, Ivan Dychko vs. Jermaine Franklin Jr., Steven Nelson vs. Raiko Santana, Reito Tsutsumi vs. Javier Martinez, and Sultan Almohamed vs. Martin Caraballo.
A central theme surrounding this fight, particularly for Crawford, is his insatiable competitive nature. Described as the most competitive person many have ever met, Crawford's existence revolves around proving people wrong. Whether it's playing cards, video games, chess, or even cooking and sleeping, losing is simply not an option for him. This drive, which he attributes to being undersized his entire life, has pushed him to work harder and consistently seek out challenges where others might falter. WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson notes, "Everything is a competition with him. He feels like he can beat you at anything and he truly believes everything he says."
Crawford's relentless pursuit of victory has shaped his career. He mostly avoids team sports, preferring individual endeavors where he is solely responsible for the outcome. This was a key reason he abandoned football for boxing as a teenager. His former opponent, Shawn Porter, who has known Crawford since their amateur days, observed Crawford's solitary nature and a "chip on his shoulder" that has only grown stronger over time. This "me against the world" narrative, even as he gains widespread respect, continues to fuel him.
His professional journey began in 2008 without the significant hype surrounding some of his peers. However, after winning his first 19 fights, Crawford burst onto the national scene in 2013 by stepping in on three days' notice to decisively outpoint Breidis Prescott. This victory solidified his belief that he was the best fighter in the world. He built his career by trusting only his close-knit training team and viewing everyone else as an enemy. This mindset was evident in his 2021 clash with Shawn Porter, which Crawford took personally, ultimately knocking Porter out and sending him into retirement.
Having run roughshod over the welterweight division, culminating in his dominant win over Errol Spence in 2023, Crawford needed a new "Mount Everest" to climb. While a move to 154 pounds was initially considered, the appeal waned after Jermell Charlo's loss to Canelo. After a decision victory over Israil Madrimov at 154 pounds, Crawford set his sights on Canelo. With the backing of Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, Crawford's pursuit intensified, especially as Canelo publicly dismissed him due to size. Canelo's assessment that Crawford is "great" but not "elite" served as further motivation for Crawford to make his undisputed foe an enemy.
Beyond his competitive drive, Crawford is also known for his meticulous preparation and exceptional boxing IQ. Ray Beltran, one of only three opponents to go the distance with Crawford since 2014, praises his former foe: "He controls every aspect of the fight and is always one step ahead of you. From the way he cuts angles to his underrated footwork, he does just about everything perfectly. He's the closest thing to [Floyd] Mayweather that I have seen but he is a lot more dangerous." Beltran believes Crawford's hunger for greatness, combined with his skill, will enable him to pull off the upset against Canelo.
As Crawford prepares to make history by attempting to become the first male boxer to be an undisputed champion in three weight divisions (a feat only accomplished by Claressa Shields in women's boxing), he embraces his underdog status. With betting odds placing him at +145 against Canelo's -180, and fighting in what he expects to be "enemy territory" during Mexican Independence Day weekend, Crawford feels the deck is stacked against him. "I have his people going against me and my own people going against me," he states, asserting that this opposition only fuels him further. He famously declared, "Canelo lost before, so he understands how to lose. I don't."
Recent days have also seen Crawford sarcastically dismiss rumors of a shoulder injury ahead of the fight. "Yeah, my shoulder's messed up everyone," he quipped, "Don't tell Canelo!" He also addressed concerns about his non-vintage performance against Madrimov, redirecting attention to Canelo's own "labored" victory over William Scull. This fight, pitting Crawford's ruthless ambition against Canelo's undisputed reign, promises to be a captivating spectacle for boxing fans worldwide.
