Crawford vs. Canelo Aftermath: Retirement Rumors & Epic Viewing Figures!
)
Terence Crawford cemented his status as one of boxing's all-time greats following a historic victory over Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas. Crawford, the 37-year-old Nebraska native, defeated Alvarez via unanimous decision to claim the undisputed super-middleweight championship. This monumental win not only crowned him the new king of the super-middleweights but also made him the first male boxer in history to become an undisputed champion across three different weight classes, placing him in an elite category alongside legends such as Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao who have won world titles in five or more divisions.
Nigerian mixed martial artist and former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya was among those who hailed Crawford's achievement. On his YouTube channel, Adesanya expressed his admiration, stating, “Most people don’t know s*** about boxing, but Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford does. Great fight, and just what I assumed would happen: boxing smart would beat Canelo’s tactics. From round two, I saw Canelo on the back foot, and Crawford was just dancing around him. I like Crawford – the way he fights is clean. He makes very little mistakes, and he knows the sweet science of boxing. He showed why he’s the best right now, one of the best in history.”
Following his masterclass performance, Crawford hinted at the prospect of retirement. During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, he addressed the potential end of his illustrious career, saying, “I don’t know. Like I said before, I’ll talk with my team, my family, and we’ll see what happens. It could’ve been my last fight. I don’t want to say just yet.” Despite these talks, the possibility of a rematch with Canelo Alvarez remains, with Canelo himself expressing openness to the idea. Alvarez, who has two fights remaining on his deal with Riyadh season, stated, “Like I said to him, I feel great to share the ring with great fighters like him. And if we do it again, it's going to be great. But you know what? I'm glad to share the ring with great fighters. And I'm glad to be here.” He added that his legacy in boxing is already established.
The highly anticipated showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford also garnered significant attention on Netflix, which broadcast the event. A reported 41.4 million people tuned in to watch Crawford dethrone Alvarez. The main event recorded an estimated average minute audience (AMA) of 36.6 million live+SD viewers from opening to closing bell, according to VideoAmp and Netflix, with viewing extending into the weekend. Netflix highlighted this as the most-viewed men’s championship boxing match this century. However, these impressive figures were surpassed by other major boxing events on the platform. Mike Tyson's controversial return against Jake Paul last November drew over 108 million viewers, while Katie Taylor's rematch with Amanda Serrano, which was part of the undercard for Tyson vs. Paul, attracted 74 million viewers. Of the live audience for Crawford vs. Alvarez, 20.3 million of the 36.6 million viewers were from the United States.
