South Africa's SIU Freezes R76.5 Million in Assets Tied to Eskom Graft
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) obtained a court order from the Special Tribunal freezing assets connected to businessman Siyabonga Moses Goodwill Nkosi and associated trusts, including a R13.5 million Gauteng penthouse and two Lamborghini Urus vehicles.
The scheme involved Eskom officials at the Kusile and Matla power stations approving inflated purchase orders for electrical relays — paying around R50,000 per unit against a market price of R180–R450.
Investigators found that officials deliberately split purchase orders below the R1 million threshold to bypass formal tender oversight, and uploaded false part numbers to ensure only colluding suppliers could bid.
Equipment worth over R73.6 million was purchased and remains entirely unused in storage.
The SIU confirmed referral of criminal evidence to theNational Prosecuting Authority for further action.
