Christopher Nolan Confirms New Fantasy Epic Is Shorter Than 'Oppenheimer'

Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, "The Odyssey," is generating immense excitement, building on the phenomenal success of his previous work, "Oppenheimer," which was both a box office hit and an awards-season powerhouse.
The adaptation of one of history's most renowned stories, Homer's epic, inherently brings a significant amount of pressure and high expectations.
This is further amplified by a massive cast, the utilization of new IMAX technology, and the centuries-long legacy of the source material.
Nolan confirmed in an interview with the Associated Press that "The Odyssey" will have a shorter runtime than "Oppenheimer," which clocked in at three hours. However, this does not imply a reduction in scope.
The director emphasized that the film's scale remains grand and epic, commensurate with the demands of the story he is adapting. Nolan stated, "It's an epic film, as the subject matter demands. But it is shorter."
This decision is likely welcomed by IMAX projectionists, given the literal miles-long film reel required for "Oppenheimer."
The choice to make this arguably more epic narrative shorter than a film primarily focused on boardroom discussions about morality is particularly noteworthy.
The film boasts an expansive and notable cast. Matt Damon, reuniting with Nolan after "Interstellar" and "Oppenheimer," takes on the lead role of Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, striving to return home from war.
Tom Hollandportrays Telemachus, Odysseus's son, while Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus's wife.
Jon Bernthal is cast as Menelaus, the Greek king of Sparta. Early footage has teased major sequences, including the Trojan Horse, the Cyclops, and even the undead rising, underscoring that Nolan is not pursuing a small-scale independent project.
Damon also revealed the profound physical toll of the role, requiring him to be uncomfortable daily, losing significant weight to achieve a "lean but strong" physique.
Other prominent actors in the ensemble include Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Corey Hawkins, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jimmy Gonzales, Nick Tarabay, Maurice Compte, and Iddo Goldberg.
Nolan openly acknowledged the specific pressure of adapting "The Odyssey," given the audience's deep connection to the story and their expectations for an epic cinematic experience.
He stated, "There’s a massive amount of pressure. Anyone taking on ‘The Odyssey’ is taking on the hopes and dreams of people for epic movies everywhere, and that comes with a huge responsibility."
Drawing from his experience with "The Dark Knight" trilogy, Nolan learned that audiences desire a "strong and sincere interpretation" from filmmakers tackling beloved stories. He noted that he truly strived "to make the best film possible."
"The Odyssey" stands out as the first Hollywood feature film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
To facilitate this, a new IMAX film casing, dubbed a "blimp," was engineered. This innovation significantly reduces the noise produced by IMAX cameras, enabling the capture of dialogue-driven scenes on the large-format film without audio interference. Nolan revealed to Empire magazine that he "shot over 2 million feet of film" during the 91-day production.
He also shared his motivation for adapting Homer's epic, explaining that he sought to fill gaps in cinematic culture by bringing the weight and credibility of an A-budget, large-scale Hollywood IMAX production to mythological cinematic work, a genre he admired in his youth through films like Ray Harryhausen's creations.
While the exact runtime and rating are yet to be disclosed, "The Odyssey" is slated to open in theaters on July 17, 2026, distributed by Universal Pictures.
