Chelsea Demolish West Ham 5-1 in Derby Thriller, Leaving Former Boss Stunned

Chelsea delivered a stunning performance, thrashing London rivals West Ham United 5-1 at the London Stadium, a victory made all the more remarkable by the last-minute withdrawal of their talisman and top scorer, Cole Palmer. The comprehensive win sent a significant message to the rest of the league, demonstrating Chelsea's attacking prowess even without their key player.
Before kick-off, there were palpable concerns among Chelsea supporters when Palmer limped out of the warm-up, later re-emerging to take a seat in the dugout. These fears were seemingly confirmed when Lucas Paqueta unleashed an early goal-of-the-season contender in the sixth minute, a powerful and swerving left-footed rocket from over 25 yards that left Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with little chance, giving West Ham the lead.
However, the eleven players fielded by Enzo Maresca quickly dispelled any doubts, turning the game on its head within half an hour with a ruthless spell of attacking football. Joao Pedro, continuing his hot streak since joining from Brighton, scored the equalizer by heading home from a Marc Cucurella flick-on following Pedro Neto’s corner. Shortly after, Paqueta's heavy touch on the edge of his own box led to a loss of possession to Trevoh Chalobah, and Pedro crossed to the far post for an unmarked Neto to volley in, completing the comeback by the 23rd minute.
The third goal, a moment of immense promise for Chelsea's season, involved teenage Brazilian Estevao, signed for an initial £29m. Making his debut and replacing Palmer in the lineup, Estevao became Chelsea’s youngest Premier League assist-maker at 18 years and 120 days. He ran onto a lay-off, sprinted through the West Ham defense, and crossed for Enzo Fernandez to score from close range, extending Chelsea's lead to 3-1.
The rout continued in the second half. West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen flapped at a corner, allowing Moises Caicedo to prod the ball home via the crossbar for Chelsea's fourth. Trevoh Chalobah then scrambled the ball into the net from close range following another set-piece, completing the 5-1 scoreline before the hour mark. The dominance was so absolute that Chelsea nearly added a sixth when Reece James found Estevao, only for Hermansen to save.
West Ham, under former Blues boss Graham Potter, experienced a record-low start to their season, conceding eight goals in their first two top-flight games, the most they have ever done. Their frustrations boiled over, with boos at half-time and numerous fans heading for an early exit. A young Hammers pitch invader even provoked mayhem on the touchline as the team collapsed, despite a late consolation goal from Kyle Walker-Peters.
The victory underscored Chelsea's depth and resilience, proving they could deliver a clinical and comprehensive performance even without their star player, Cole Palmer. The individual brilliance of players like Joao Pedro, Pedro Neto, and the impactful debut of Estevao signaled a formidable attacking threat from Maresca's side.
