ChatGPT's Meteoric Rise: Sam Altman Reveals Staggering 800M Weekly Users!

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Monday that ChatGPT has reached an impressive milestone of 800 million weekly active users. This significant increase highlights growing adoption across consumers, developers, enterprises, and governments. The popular AI tool has shown rapid growth, previously reporting 700 million weekly active users in August and 500 million at the end of March, demonstrating its unprecedented expansion since its launch in November 2022.
During the keynote presentation at OpenAI’s Dev Day, Altman also revealed that 4 million developers are now building with OpenAI, processing over 6 billion tokens per minute on the API. He emphasized the transformation of AI, stating, "Thanks to all of you, AI has gone from something people build play with to something people build with every day." The event also featured announcements for new tools designed to facilitate building apps within ChatGPT and constructing more complex agentic systems. These innovations are expected to enable "a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized, that you can chat with."
ChatGPT has rapidly become the preeminent consumer AI product and one of the fastest-growing online services ever. Beyond its core capabilities, the service recently expanded into proactive offerings with OpenAI Pulse, providing customized morning briefs to participating users. However, its journey has not been without challenges, facing concerns regarding sycophancy and AI-induced delusions, notably highlighted by the case of Allan Brooks, who was reportedly misled into believing he made a novel mathematical discovery with ChatGPT’s assistance.
In a related development, OpenAI, while still legally designated as a non-profit, recently became the most valuable privately held company in the world. This valuation, reaching $500 billion, followed a private stock sale of $6.6 billion in shares. Concurrently, OpenAI is aggressively pursuing its goal to secure AI chips and build substantial AI infrastructure. The company has also maintained a blistering pace of product releases, including a new version of its video-generation tool Sora, launched last week with an accompanying social media network, and a partnership with Stripe to introduce a platform for agentic commerce during the same week.
