Charlo to Clash with Resendiz for WBA Belt in Highly Anticipated Showdown!
In a highly anticipated boxing event, Jermall Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) is slated to challenge Armando Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) for the WBA super middleweight title on May 2. This championship bout will serve as the co-main event to Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez's unified cruiserweight title defense against David Benavidez. The event is scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be part of the PBC Pay-Per-View on Prime Video.
Sources confirmed the Charlo-Resendiz fight with ESPN on Tuesday, with Boxeo de Primera initially reporting the matchup. Discussions for Resendiz's first title defense against Charlo began approximately a month ago, following the reported collapse of a proposed fight against Jaime Munguia.
Armando Resendiz was elevated to full WBA super middleweight champion after Terence Crawford's retirement in December. He had previously secured the interim title with a stunning upset victory over Caleb Plant last May. Resendiz's win against Plant disrupted earlier plans for a fight between Plant and Charlo. Prior to this, Resendiz became a notable name by knocking out Jarrett Hurd in 2023, though his momentum was briefly halted after being stopped by Elijah Garcia in his subsequent fight. He regained his footing with a win against Fernando Paliza before facing Plant, where he was largely considered an underdog. Now, Resendiz, at 27 years old, aims to validate his upset victory by taking on another high-profile opponent in Charlo.
Jermall Charlo, 35, a former two-division world champion who held titles at middleweight and junior middleweight, maintains an undefeated record. Despite his sporadic fighting schedule over the past five years, with only four fights since 2020, Charlo is looking to become a three-division world champion. He ended an 18-month hiatus from boxing by stopping Thomas LaManna on the same card where Resendiz defeated Plant.
The announcement of this fight comes from ESPN's combat sports reporter, Andreas Hale, who covers MMA, boxing, and pro wrestling. Hale, also a host for Sirius XM's Fight Nation, was previously a senior writer at DAZN and Sporting News. His career began as a music journalist for outlets such as HipHopDX, The Grammys, and Jay-Z's Life+Times. He is also an NAACP Image Award-nominated filmmaker, having produced the animated short film "Bridges" in 2024.
