Call to Arms: Bitcoin Advocates Rally to Protect Peer-to-Peer Rights

Recent legal outcomes, notably the Tornado Cash trial and the Samourai Wallet case, have underscored an urgent need to protect peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction rights within the cryptocurrency space. In response to these developments, a coalition of prominent organizations including the Bitcoin Policy Institute, Save Our Wallets, CoinCenter, and the Bitcoin Design Foundation, alongside various regional Bitcoin hubs across the United States, has launched a critical initiative: the “Satoshi Needs You!” campaign.
This campaign aims to galvanize Bitcoin enthusiasts nationwide to engage directly with their elected officials. The core objective is to advocate for the inclusion and support of specific provisions from the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act (BRCA) within the most current Senate iteration of the CLARITY Act. These provisions are designed to offer robust protections for both the developers and providers of noncustodial crypto technology, as well as for the everyday users who rely on noncustodial Bitcoin and other crypto tools.
The significance of these legislative safeguards cannot be overstated. Without them, the fundamental right for Bitcoin users to transact freely could be jeopardized, and the crypto community could witness an increase in legal actions against developers simply for creating noncustodial cryptocurrency technology. The campaign emphasizes that securing these protections is vital for the continued health and freedom of the Bitcoin network.
Kyle Olney, co-founder of SaveOurWallets.org, articulated the gravity of the situation in a press release, stating, “This is a moment of great danger and great opportunity for the Bitcoin network. We can’t take anything for granted until our fundamental rights to economic liberty in the digital realm have been codified into law. We need EVERY Bitcoiner to get involved, contact their representatives in Washington, D.C., and ensure this congress continues to execute on pro-Bitcoin policy.” He further added, “We have a responsibility to fight for our freedoms like the right to transact, and to pass those rights on for future generations.”
Therefore, all Bitcoiners are urged to take immediate action. Individuals should visit SaveOurWallets.org to gain a deeper understanding of the CLARITY Act, particularly Section 109, and to easily obtain contact information for their Senators. This direct engagement is crucial to impress upon their representatives the importance of supporting the current Senate draft of the bill.
Through collective effort, the campaign strives to ensure that Bitcoin remains true to Satoshi Nakamoto's original vision: a system of peer-to-peer electronic cash that functions without the necessity of third-party intermediaries or the disclosure of identifying information. It is presented as a system deeply rooted in American values of economic freedom and financial liberty, and its accessibility for all depends on the active participation of its community.
