Burna Boy Confesses to Altercation: 'I Slapped Him Twice!'

Grammy-winning singer Damini "Burna Boy" Ogulu recently broke his silence regarding a physical altercation involving disc jockey Michael "DJ Tunez" Adeyinka. The incident, which occurred days prior at a popular weekly Afrobeats gathering in Lagos, had generated significant attention and unconfirmed reports. Initial claims suggested that ten individuals from Burna Boy's entourage had allegedly attacked DJ Tunez, prompting intervention from onlookers to restore order.

However, Burna Boy, 34, vehemently debunked these unconfirmed reports during an Instagram Live session. Just hours after fellow artist Ayodeji "Wizkid" Balogun had publicly taunted him over the incident, the Rivers-born singer clarified his version of events. He emphatically stated, "It wasn't ten people who beat DJ Tunez; it was only me. I swear on my mother's (Bose Ogulu) life, if it were ten people, Ogun (the god of iron) should take my mother to where Wizkid's mother is." He further added that he had instructed everyone present not to touch DJ Tunez, reiterating that he alone slapped him twice, and if ten people had been involved, the outcome would have been far more severe.

Burna Boy expressed his surprise and disappointment that DJ Tunez chose to address the matter on social media (X/Twitter) rather than confronting him in person with his entourage or boss. He extended this sentiment to Wizkid, who also took to X to criticize him instead of engaging face-to-face. Emphasizing his stance, Burna Boy declared, "Their power is on the internet; mine is in real life." He believed his earlier actions had warranted a direct response from DJ Tunez's boss, whose subsequent social media criticism only solidified Burna Boy's conviction.

The "Ojuelegba" crooner, Wizkid, had previously criticized Burna Boy for the attack at an event known for attracting A-list entertainers. His criticism on X also subtly included mocking references that were tied to ongoing internet jokes concerning music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, adding another layer to the public dispute.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ) took a firm stance, announcing a temporary ban on Burna Boy's music. The association issued a statement condemning "acts of hostility and division within the industry," and called upon all stakeholders to actively promote unity, respect, and professionalism across the entertainment sector. The NDJ emphasized its commitment to ensuring freedom and equality for all DJs nationwide, asserting that collective success is hindered when a portion of the community is held back.

The official statement from the NDJ partly read, "Burna Boy's music is temporarily unavailable on any of our DJs' playlists till further notice." The association also confirmed its intention to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident involving DJ Tunez. Furthermore, it urged DJs across Nigeria to maintain vigilance and respect towards all artists at their events, reinforcing the message, "Respect the DJs. DJs to DJs is highly effective. Please note that all DJs are equal."
