Boxing World Mourns: Tragic Death of Legend Ricky Hatton at 46 Shocks Sports World

Boxing legend Ricky Hatton, known affectionately as 'The Hitman', tragically passed away at the age of 46. He was found at his Manchester home on Sunday, September 14, with Greater Manchester Police confirming the death is not being treated as suspicious. Hatton, an MBE recipient, leaves behind a remarkable boxing legacy and a profound impact on countless individuals, evident in the outpouring of tributes from across the sporting world and beyond.
Hatton's professional career, spanning from 1997 to 2012, saw him capture multiple world championships at both light-welterweight and welterweight. With an impressive record of 45 wins and only 3 losses, he rose to become one of Britain's most beloved fighters. His career-defining moment came in June 2005 when he defeated Kostya Tszyu in Manchester, a victory he often cited as his greatest. He went on to face other boxing greats like Jose Luis Castillo before experiencing his first professional loss after 43 fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007. Hatton was renowned for his all-action, tenacious fighting style and his 'man of the people' persona, which endeared him to legions of boisterous fans who often followed him to Las Vegas. Famously, he entered the ring to 'Blue Moon', the anthem of his beloved Manchester City, often accompanied by Oasis brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher.
Beyond the ropes, Hatton bravely battled significant personal struggles, openly discussing his issues with mental health, alcohol abuse, and depression following his retirement. He checked into The Priory clinic in 2010 and later became a vocal advocate for mental health awareness in boxing, emphasizing the importance of seeking help. His journey of recovery and his candidness inspired many, with Hatton often expressing pride in how his story motivated others dealing with similar challenges, including weight and mental health issues. In his post-fighting career, he transitioned into a successful boxing promoter and trainer, guiding Zhanat Zhakiyanov to a world bantamweight title. He also ventured into television, appearing on 'Dancing on Ice' in 2024, where he briefly dated 'Coronation Street' star Claire Sweeney. His personal life also saw a split from Jennifer Dooley, mother of his daughters Millie and Fearne, in 2016. His son, Campbell Hatton, also pursued a career in professional boxing.
Just weeks before his untimely death, Hatton had announced a much-anticipated comeback fight against Eisa Aldah, scheduled for December 2, 2025, in Dubai. He had been intensely training, as evidenced by his final social media post. Hatton cited inspiration from the Oasis reunion and his own physical and mental transformation as motivations for his return, expressing a desire to make his fans proud while assuring them he would only take on sensible fights. He wanted to demonstrate what was possible for someone who had overcome past demons and gotten back into shape.
The news of Hatton's passing triggered a flood of heartfelt tributes from across the globe. Fellow boxing icons such as Amir Khan, Tyson Fury, Tommy Fury, Frank Bruno, Chris Eubank Jr., Anthony Joshua, and Frank Warren lauded his skill, warrior spirit, and inspirational character. Promoters Jake Paul and Turki Alalshikh also hailed him as one of the greatest British fighters. Amir Khan, in a particularly poignant message, highlighted Hatton's role as a friend, mentor, and warrior, emphasizing the critical importance of addressing mental health.
His impact extended beyond boxing into the world of football, particularly given his lifelong devotion to Manchester City. Former footballers like David James, Michael Owen, Stan Collymore, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards, and Roy Keane shared their grief and admiration. Richards, visibly emotional, described Hatton as a
