Boxing King Crowned! Navarrete Unifies WBO, IBF Titles with Stunning TKO
Emanuel "Vaquero" Navarrete secured a decisive victory against Eduardo "Sugar" Nunez on Saturday night in Glendale, Arizona, unifying the WBO and IBF junior lightweight titles. The highly anticipated fight, expected to be a close contest, concluded with Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs) dominating Nunez and ultimately winning by an 11th-round TKO.
The fight was stopped by referee Benjamin Rodriguez, who acted on the ringside doctor's advice due to Nunez's right eye being swollen shut. Navarrete, ranked as ESPN's No. 1 junior lightweight, controlled the initial rounds before intensifying his attack in the seventh round. He displayed superior speed, relentlessly punishing Nunez, who is ranked No. 6, with body and head shots. Nunez, in a desperate attempt, sought a decisive punch, but by the ninth round, his right eye was completely closed, leaving Navarrete in full command of the fight across all ranges.
Despite being friends with Nunez, Navarrete maintained his relentless pace throughout the bout. He landed an impressive 182 of 381 power punches, achieving a 48% connect rate. Reflecting on the difficulty of hurting an opponent, Navarrete stated in his post-fight interview, "It's difficult to see your opponent hurting in there, but it's also really difficult to not continue and go on to win the fight. You never know what might happen in those last rounds. He could catch you with a shot and it could be over. So, I needed to continue doing my work in there."
While Nunez and his corner wished to continue, the doctor's decision to stop the bout prevailed. Nunez expressed his respect for the decision to prioritize his health, saying, "I would have liked to finish, but I respect the decision to protect my health." He also shared his admiration for Navarrete, calling him "the toughest fighter at 130 pounds" and acknowledging himself as a fan of Navarrete's career.
Navarrete, who had only one fight in 2025—a no-contest against Charly Suarez in May—appeared sharper, faster, and notably stronger in this performance. When questioned about future opponents such as O'Shaquie Foster (WBC) and Lamont Roach (WBA), the newly unified champion emphasized his immediate desire to celebrate his victory and rest. He preferred to defer decisions about his next fight, stating, "It's very premature to think about that right now. I just want to have some rest, take some time away and just enjoy [the victory]. I think in the coming days, when the calm sets in and I've had time to rest, I'll decide what's next. But right now, that's not on my mind."
