Box Office Shockwave: Ridley Scott's Latest Historical Epic Suffers Major Defeat

Timothée Chalamet’s latest release, Marty Supreme, has emerged as an unexpected box office force, putting serious distance between itself and recent big-budget historical dramas. The ping-pong biopic is on track to become the first film from A24 to cross the $100 million mark at the domestic box office, a milestone that underscores its rare blend of critical acclaim and commercial momentum.
As of the most recent figures, Marty Supreme has earned $70.1 million in North America, with an additional $8.4 million from international markets, bringing its global total to $78.5 million. That domestic performance alone has already surpassed the $61.6 million U.S. total posted by Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, signaling a notable shift in audience interest away from traditional historical epics toward character-driven stories.
Released in 2023, Napoleon has since been widely viewed as one of Ridley Scott’s most disappointing financial outings. Despite earning $217 million worldwide, the film’s estimated $200 million production budget meant it likely needed close to $400 million to break even. Its theatrical run was further overshadowed by backlash over historical inaccuracies, a debate that kept the film in the spotlight for reasons beyond its box office performance.
By contrast, Marty Supreme arrived with heavy anticipation and has largely delivered. Early reviews described it as one of A24’s strongest releases to date, while Chalamet’s portrayal of Marty Mauser has fueled growing Oscar chatter. Coming off high-profile performances in films like Dune: Part Two, the actor continues to cement his reputation as a reliable box office draw and serious awards contender.
The film also benefits from a diverse supporting cast. Gwyneth Paltrow appears as Kay Stone, one of Marty’s romantic interests, while Odessa A’zion plays Rachel Mizler, the woman he ultimately ends up with. Tyler, the Creator takes on the role of Marty’s friend Wally, and Kevin O’Leary portrays Milton Rockwell, a key financial backer. The project was written and directed by Josh Safdie, best known for his work on Uncut Gems, adding further credibility to the film’s creative pedigree.
