Bonnie Tyler's Health Scare: Singer Recovers From Coma, Cancels Summer Tour
Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has emerged from an induced coma after emergency surgery in Portugal, though she remains in intensive care. Her team has confirmed a slow but steady improvement in her condition, necessitating the postponement or cancellation of her summer tour dates.
Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, aged 75, has emerged from an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery performed in Faro, Portugal. While she is no longer in the coma, the iconic artist, famous for her 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” remains in intensive care and is described as “very unwell.”
Tyler was rushed to the hospital in May for the emergency procedure. Doctors decided to place her in an induced coma to facilitate her recovery process. A statement released via her official website confirmed the gradual improvement in her condition, noting, “Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal. Although her condition is improving it is a slow process.”
Despite the current challenges, her medical team expressed optimism regarding her eventual full recovery, though they anticipate a lengthy period of rehabilitation. “Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time,” the statement added, highlighting the need for patience during this period.
As a direct consequence of her ongoing recovery, all of Bonnie Tyler’s scheduled summer tour dates will either be postponed or completely cancelled. Her team conveyed their apologies to fans and promoter partners for the unavoidable disruption, expressing hope that some autumn performances might still proceed if her health permits. They concluded the announcement with the sentiment, “We hope to see you next year instead.”
Representatives also extended gratitude to her global fanbase for their overwhelming support and well-wishes, confirming that Tyler is aware of the messages and deeply appreciates the encouragement.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Neath, Wales, Bonnie Tyler achieved international stardom in the late 1970s and 1980s. After gaining initial recognition with “Lost in France” in 1977, she cemented her global status with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a power ballad that topped charts across the Atlantic and continues to resonate, having surpassed one billion streams on Spotify over four decades after its initial release.
Throughout her distinguished career, Tyler has received multiple Grammy nominations and represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013. In 2023, her significant contributions to music were formally recognized with her appointment as an MBE.
