Boniface Transfer Saga: AC Milan Deal in Jeopardy Amidst Medical Doubts & Final Decision

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface's eagerly anticipated transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to AC Milan has dramatically collapsed, following a series of extensive medical examinations and growing internal concerns within the Italian club. Initially, the deal was structured as a season-long loan for €5 million with an option to buy for around €30 million, and Boniface had already agreed to personal terms. Milan had even prepared the iconic No. 22 shirt for his unveiling, a number historically worn by Brazilian legend Kaka, signaling their high expectations for the Nigerian forward.
Upon his arrival in Milan, Boniface underwent initial medical checks at the Centro Ambrosiano, followed by further examinations at the Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute. These additional tests were ordered due to concerns linked to his injury history, which includes two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) operations and recurring groin problems. Italian journalist Marco Guidi confirmed that AC Milan doctors identified an issue with Boniface’s right knee, stating it was “not 100% fit.” This finding immediately raised red flags and caused Milan’s medical team to hesitate in signing off the deal.
Conflicting reports emerged during this period; while some Nigerian journalists insisted Boniface had passed his medicals, renowned transfer insiders like Fabrizio Romano and Sacha Tavolieri suggested the latest scans had cooled Milan’s enthusiasm, putting the move “at real risk” of collapsing. Milan’s Sporting Director, Igli Tare, acknowledged the situation, stating, “We are checking Victor Boniface medical. His football skills are excellent, but we need to take the right decision. We will make final decision soon on his medical also with our coach.”
Adding to the complications, it was reported that a manager within AC Milan was not in favor of the transfer, expressing concerns over Boniface's injury record and long-term reliability, despite directors being impressed with his Bundesliga performances. Milan also considered renegotiating the terms of the agreement with Leverkusen, possibly seeking a lower or even free loan fee, to minimize their financial risk given the medical concerns.
Ultimately, after spending 48 hours in Milan awaiting the club’s final decision, Boniface returned to Germany. According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport and Fabrizio Romano, AC Milan officially decided to withdraw from the deal entirely. The Rossoneri have now shifted their focus to securing two alternative strikers to bolster their attacking options.
For Boniface, this marks a significant setback, echoing a similar failed transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr seven months prior. He returns to Bayer Leverkusen, where his game time may be limited under the club's manager. Despite winning the Bundesliga and German Cup with Leverkusen, the collapse of his Milan dream leaves his immediate future uncertain, though he remains under contract with the German club until 2028.
