Bolt's 'Wait and Save' Sparks Fury: Drivers Protest New Cheaper Ride Category

e-Hailing drivers in Benin City, under the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), have vehemently opposed Bolt's newly introduced 'Wait and Save' ride option. This category, available in Edo State and several other markets, appears as the cheapest option, following Basic and Comfort. Drivers argue that this option is not in their best interest, especially given the current economic climate characterized by high fuel prices and a recently imposed Value Added Tax (VAT) by Bolt itself.
Bolt describes 'Wait and Save' as a budget-friendly choice for riders willing to wait longer for a lower fare. The company claims it connects price-sensitive riders with B2B (back-to-back) drivers, ensuring high earnings for drivers by eliminating idle time and reducing prices for riders. Bolt also clarified that the availability of this option is city-specific and that accepting orders under this category is entirely optional for drivers.
However, Comrade Russell Eghaghe, the Edo State Chairman of AUATON, strongly criticized the new option. He questioned how it benefits drivers, particularly when it offers the lowest fares. Eghaghe highlighted that drivers bear significant costs, including fuel, data, airtime, and vehicle maintenance, making the low earnings from 'Wait and Save' rides unsustainable. He provided an example where a driver might work all day, spend heavily on fuel, and earn as little as ₦14,000, from which Bolt still deducts its commission.
A major point of contention for drivers is the perceived lack of consultation from Bolt regarding decisions that directly impact their welfare and earnings. Eghaghe expressed that this disregard makes drivers feel disrespected and undervalued as partners. He pointed out that many drivers already face serious health challenges due to long working hours and economic pressure, questioning if Bolt considers these realities. Furthermore, drivers noted that while Bolt claims 'Wait and Save' eliminates idle time through back-to-back rides, some riders who opt for this category still keep drivers waiting longer upon arrival.
The introduction of 'Wait and Save' follows a recent increase in Bolt's commission to 21% in Benin City and a 2.9% increase in booking fees for riders. Although Bolt stated these adjustments were for service enhancement and safety features, drivers in Benin City feel discriminated against. Eghaghe advises drivers to avoid the 'Wait and Save' option, deeming it financially and physically unsafe. He urged Bolt to engage in constructive dialogue with AUATON, Edo State Chapter, to review policies that are currently pushing drivers into hardship and unsafe working conditions, emphasizing that respect must be reflected in actions and fair compensation, not just words.
