Blockbuster Bust: 'The Bride!' Dethrones Warner Bros. Streak Amid Divisive Reviews

The domestic theatrical market is presenting a mixed bag this weekend, with Pixar celebrating a significant success with its new original film, "Hoppers," while Warner Bros. appears to be facing its first box office disappointment in a year with "The Bride!". This contrast highlights the volatile nature of film releases, even for established studios.
Pixar's "Hoppers" is poised for a remarkable opening, projected to gross approximately $40 million this weekend. This figure marks the biggest debut for an original film from the esteemed animation studio since "Coco" in 2017. Critically acclaimed, "Hoppers" has received near-unanimous praise, positioning it to outperform several recent Pixar originals such as "Elio," "Elemental," and "Onward." This success is particularly significant as Pixar has grappled with subpar box office performances and subsequent layoffs over the past five years, making "Hoppers" a much-needed win for the studio.
In stark contrast, Warner Bros. is bracing for a potential stumble with the release of "The Bride!". This film is anticipated to end the studio's impressive nine-film hot streak over the last year, a period during which Warner Bros. garnered industry accolades for its diverse slate of films. Their recent successes include critically acclaimed original titles like Ryan Coogler's "Sinners," Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another," and Zach Cregger's "Weapons," all of which are strong Oscar contenders, with "Sinners" notably setting a record for the most Oscar nominations in history. Furthermore, last year saw Warner Bros. release successful blockbusters such as "A Minecraft Movie," "The Conjuring: Last Rites," "Final Destination Bloodlines," and "Superman." Their momentum extended into 2026 with Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights," a controversial film that has already grossed over $200 million worldwide against an $80 million budget.
"The Bride!", inspired by the 1935 classic "Bride of Frankenstein," carries a reported budget of $90 million. Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and starring Oscar-favorite Jessie Buckley in the lead role, the film boasts a star-studded supporting cast including Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Annette Bening. Despite its pedigree, "The Bride!" has opened to divisive reviews, mirroring the reception of "Wuthering Heights." Critics have offered mixed opinions, with some commending Gyllenhaal's audacious vision, while others have criticized its muddled tone and overly theatrical performances. The film currently holds a 60% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus describes it as "Concocted with all the restraint of a mad scientist's experiment, THE BRIDE! lurches in so many different creative directions that the overall effect is both sloppy and inspired."
Box office projections for "The Bride!" are modest, with expectations of less than $10 million in its domestic opening weekend, following an estimated $3 million on its opening day from over 3,000 domestic theaters. Worldwide, the film is looking at roughly $20 million or less by Sunday. Given typical revenue splits between studios and theaters, "The Bride!" would need to generate approximately $200 million worldwide to break even, making these initial figures particularly disappointing for the period crime saga. Film enthusiasts are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates on its box office performance.
