Billions Invested As Cape Town Airport Kicks Off Mega Overhaul

Cape Town International Airport is set for its most extensive transformation in decades, with construction on a major renovation program scheduled to begin in March 2026 and conclude by 2029.

The upgrade forms part of a broader capital investment drive by Airports Company South Africa, with R21.7 billion (about £955 million) allocated specifically to Cape Town.

The scale of the investment signals a strategic effort to strengthen the airport’s position as Southern Africa’s leading leisure gateway.

This is not a cosmetic refurbishment but a comprehensive infrastructure overhaul aimed at future-proofing the airport against rising passenger volumes.

A central component is the construction of a new domestic arrivals terminal valued at roughly R2.4 billion, designed to ease congestion and modernize the arrivals experience.

The international terminal will also undergo a significant R853 million expansion, adding gates, widening concourses, and improving passenger flow to accommodate sustained growth in long-haul services.

Security and operational upgrades form another key pillar of the redevelopment. Modernized screening facilities and infrastructure enhancements are planned, with ACSA confirming that most projects will follow a three-year construction timeline.

Preliminary improvements, including upgrades to ablution facilities, are already underway ahead of the main works.

The overarching objective is to align the airport with global hub standards and ensure it can efficiently handle next-generation aircraft and traffic growth.

ACSA leadership has acknowledged that construction at a fully operational airport will inevitably cause temporary disruption.

Passenger movement may be affected during phased works, and some facilities could be relocated or scaled back.

Political stakeholders in the Western Cape have requested assurances that disruptions will be carefully managed, underscoring the airport’s vital role in sustaining the region’s tourism-driven economy, particularly during the peak November–March season.

For travel professionals packaging Western Cape itineraries, proactive client communication will be essential over the next three years.

Advising travelers to allow extra time for check-in, security, and boarding during early construction phases will help manage expectations.

While short-term inconvenience is unavoidable, the long-term outlook is strongly positive: a modernized airport will enhance Cape Town’s global competitiveness, support expanded route networks from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and strengthen Southern Africa’s broader tourism ecosystem.
