Barcelona's Bold Move: Osimhen Eyed as Lewandowski's Successor!

FC Barcelona is actively exploring options to strengthen its attacking lineup, with the potential for a significant summer signing, as indicated by former club president Joan Laporta. The Spanish giants are reportedly eyeing several top forwards, including Nigeria and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, who is highly admired by the FC Barcelona hierarchy for his pace, power, and finishing ability, qualities that could significantly bolster their current attack.
Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray for a record transfer fee last summer and quickly became a fan favorite, has expressed openness to a move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs despite his happiness in Turkey. However, any potential transfer would be complex due to financial considerations. Galatasaray reportedly values the 27-year-old at over €100 million, coupled with an estimated salary demand of around €15 million net per season. Given Barcelona's current adherence to strict financial regulations, meeting both demands simultaneously could prove challenging.
The club's search for a new center-forward comes as veteran striker Robert Lewandowski approaches the end of his tenure. The 37-year-old Poland international, who has scored 115 goals in 179 appearances since arriving in 2022, is nearing the expiry of his contract, and Barcelona is not expected to offer him a new one. Lewandowski has seen a reduced role this season, with head coach Hansi Flick experimenting with other attacking options, including Ferran Torres as a central striker. However, Torres has not fully convinced as a long-term solution, prompting Barcelona to intensify their search.
Despite the financial hurdles, Laporta remains confident in Barcelona's capacity to make a major investment if a suitable opportunity arises. He stated that the club has the financial strength to make adjustments in any position, whether it be a center-forward, midfielder, defender, or goalkeeper, if deemed necessary and proposed by Sporting Director Deco, whose work he praised for assembling an “extraordinary, excellent squad.” Laporta emphasized that signing players is not mandatory, but the club will act on market opportunities that improve the squad.
According to reports, Barcelona has drawn up a shortlist of potential strikers. While Victor Osimhen and Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush (from Manchester City) are among the names on their radar as viable alternatives, Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid is believed to be Barcelona’s top priority. Sporting Director Deco admires Alvarez for his movement between the lines, seeing him as an ideal long-term replacement for Lewandowski. However, Alvarez is also expected to command fees well above €100 million, and Atletico Madrid is under no pressure to sell him. Another elite striker admired is Harry Kane of Bayern Munich, though he is considered an unlikely option due to his age and the substantial financial package required.
Ultimately, Barcelona may pivot to more attainable options like Osimhen or Marmoush if negotiations for their primary targets prove too expensive. The complexity of balancing financial constraints with the strategic need to replace a prolific striker like Lewandowski defines Barcelona's current transfer strategy. Historically, only two Nigeria internationals, Gbenga Okunowo and Emmanuel Amuneke, have played for Barcelona's senior team.
