Automotive Giant Mercedes-Benz Forges New Silicon Valley Tech Spinoff!

Athos Silicon, a newly established company, has emerged from Silicon Valley with a clear mission: to develop a groundbreaking generation of energy-efficient computing brains specifically designed for self-driving cars, drones, and various other vehicles. Spun out by Mercedes-Benz, this Santa Clara, California-based firm houses a dedicated team of chip experts who previously spent five years working within Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America. Their collective expertise is now focused on creating chips that are robust enough to ensure safety in automotive applications, while simultaneously consuming significantly less power than current solutions.
A core innovation from the Athos team lies in their approach to achieving high reliability. Traditionally, critical self-driving functions often rely on two or more separate chips operating in parallel to provide essential backups in case of failure. Athos, however, has engineered a method to deliver the same level of reliability through the use of 'chiplets.' These are tiny, individual pieces of chips that can be integrated and bound together within a single package. This integrated packaging offers a profound advantage in terms of power consumption, as it can reduce energy use by 10 to 20 times compared to systems where separate chips must communicate across a circuit board, as highlighted by Athos Silicon Chief Executive Charnjiv Bangar.
These substantial power savings are particularly critical in the rapidly evolving landscape of electric vehicles. In such vehicles, the computing brains responsible for autonomous functions are in direct competition with the vehicle's propulsion system for limited battery power. As Bangar succinctly put it, "For an electric future, electricity is a new currency," underscoring the vital importance of maximizing energy efficiency in every component. By minimizing the power draw of essential computing hardware, Athos Silicon's technology aims to contribute significantly to extending the range and performance of electric and autonomous fleets.
As part of its spinout, Athos Silicon has received both intellectual property developed by the engineering group and a "significant" investment from Mercedes-Benz. While the precise value of this transaction remains undisclosed, Athos Silicon is also actively seeking to raise venture capital from other investors. Mercedes-Benz will maintain a minority stake, and Athos Silicon will operate with an independent board. This independence is a cornerstone of Athos's strategy, allowing it to foster collaborations with a broad spectrum of carmakers, including direct competitors of Mercedes-Benz, thereby ensuring a neutral and expansive market approach.
