APC Poised To Welcome Governor Yusuf, Signalling Political Shift

The political landscape of Kano State is currently abuzz with speculation surrounding the anticipated defection of Governor Abba Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The APC in Kano State has openly declared its preparedness to welcome Governor Yusuf, with strong indications that he will make his position known in the first week of the upcoming year. This potential move has already generated considerable uncertainty within the NNPP ranks in Kano State.

Prince Abdullahi Abbas, the APC State chairman, issued a statement describing the expected defection as a move rooted in the principles of unity, reconciliation, and the overarching interests of Kano State. Abbas revealed that the invitation extended to Governor Yusuf was conveyed on behalf of the party's national leader and former Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The underlying objective of this gesture is to cultivate political harmony and accelerate development across the state. The APC leadership firmly believes that broad-based cooperation among key political actors is essential for building a more stable, united, and prosperous Kano.

“The APC is ready to receive Governor Yusuf with open arms so that, together, we can harness our collective strengths for the progress and development of Kano State,” Abbas affirmed. He further elaborated that the party's accommodating stance reflects its commitment to inclusiveness and shared responsibility, emphasizing that politics should ultimately serve the populace rather than exacerbate existing divisions. Abbas also added that upon his formal entry into the APC, Governor Yusuf, along with any other NNPP stalwarts who choose to join him, would be welcomed under the leadership of Dr. Ganduje in an atmosphere characterized by mutual respect, understanding, and collective purpose. The APC chairman expressed confidence that this anticipated realignment would not only strengthen the party's foundation in the state but also enhance cooperation among political leaders, yielding positive outcomes for governance and socio-economic development in Kano.

Speculation regarding the alleged defection intensified recently following a viral video on Sunday, in which Abdullahi Ibrahim Rogo, the governor’s Director of Protocol, openly declared his support for Governor Yusuf’s reported move to the APC. Speaking alongside party leaders in Rogo Local Government Area, Rogo stated that influential figures within the Kwankwasiyya movement in the area had collectively resolved that both Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf should defect to the APC. He posited that this decision aligns with the best interests of the people and would strategically position Kwankwaso to realize his long-standing presidential ambition. “We have resolved that Kwankwaso is our leader, and that he and Governor Yusuf should take us to APC,” Rogo declared, while simultaneously urging supporters to eschew abusive politics and maintain loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya ideology despite the planned political shift.

Similarly, Sanusi Bature, the Director-General, Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, also endorsed the alleged defection in a separate video. He explicitly aligned himself with the decision made by his Dawakin Tofa Local Government caucus to follow the governor to the APC. During a meeting of NNPP caucuses in Dawakin Tofa, Anas Danmaliki, the council chairman, asserted that the Kwankwasiyya movement had fractured into “pro-masses and anti-masses” factions, subsequently declaring his unwavering support for Governor Yusuf. Sanusi Bature echoed this stance, stating his “1,000 percent” agreement with the decision.
