Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation and a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, has offered a candid reflection on his gradual disengagement from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Amaechi, who also served as governor of Rivers State, shared insights into his political journey and experiences within the Buhari government during an interview, setting the stage for his ambitions in the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi's political career spans several key roles, beginning as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007. He then served two terms as governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, during which he also chaired the influential Nigeria Governors’ Forum between 2011 and 2013. His relationship with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) soured under former President Goodluck Jonathan, leading him to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His defection proved pivotal in the 2015 general election. As Director-General of the APC's presidential campaign organization, Amaechi orchestrated the successful campaign that unseated the incumbent PDP, marking a historic moment as the first time an opposition party triumphed over a governing party at the federal level in Nigeria through an election.

Following Buhari’s victory, Amaechi joined the cabinet as Minister of Transportation, a role he held until May 2022. During his tenure, he became one of the most visible ministers, largely due to his leadership in the administration’s ambitious railway development program.
