Alphabet's $4.75 Billion Power Grab for AI Dominance
Alphabet, Google's corporate parent, announced on Monday an agreement to acquire data center energy specialist Intersect for $4.75 billion. This strategic acquisition is part of Alphabet's broader effort to secure the substantial amounts of electricity required to power its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence technology infrastructure.
Alphabet, which heavily relies on Google's dominant search engine and various other online services for the majority of its revenue, is purchasing Intersect in its entirety. This follows an initial stake acquisition in the San Francisco-based startup by Google a year prior. Intersect had successfully raised $2.1 billion from Google and other early investors before this full acquisition.
Upon the completion of the acquisition, which is anticipated during the first half of the coming year, Alphabet plans to allow Intersect to continue operating independently. Intersect will maintain its core mission of identifying and securing diverse energy sources to meet the needs of the sprawling data centers under construction. These data centers are essential for powering the burgeoning AI services being rolled out by Google and its competitors, such as OpenAI.
